If this is your first time attending a visa appointment, it will not impact your current I-20. What is important is that you submit your deferral request as soon as possible so our team can update your existing I-20 with your Spring 2027 program dates.
Complete the "Defer to Next Term" request in Terra Dotta. You will need to log into Terra Dotta to submit it.
At this time, deferring your start date will not change your SEVIS number or status. However, if you defer your start date later in October, you will be issued a new I-20 with a new SEVIS number. For this reason, we recommend submitting your deferral request in Terra Dotta as soon as possible.
If your program can accommodate you taking courses online while you wait for your visa appointment, you may be able to begin your coursework remotely. Taking courses online while awaiting your visa appointment will not impact your SEVIS record.
- Check your eligibility. You must:
- Be in valid F-1 status at St. Cloud State University
- Be formally admitted to a new program of study at St. Cloud State University
- Request the change of education level within 60 days of the following:
- Current students: completing your current program
- OPT/STEM students: the expiration of your EAD or before you exceed the maximum unemployment days, whichever comes first
- Your new program of study must start within 5 months of the following:
- Current students: completing your current program
- OPT/STEM students: the expiration of your EAD or before you exceed the maximum unemployment days, whichever comes first
- Apply for Change of Education Level in Terra Dotta:
- ISS will create your Change of Education Level I-20 once you have completed your current program of study and your new level is listed in Student Information System (SIS)
