Heavy Rainfall Again over Central and Eastern Minnesota

Showers and thunderstorms developed to the just to the north of a stalled front in central Minnesota yesterday. The waves of storms dumped the most rain in the Cambridge area where 8-9.5 inches were reported. Some nearby high totals included 7.58 inches along the northwest shore of Little Rock Lake. Rush City Airport (9.59 inches), two reports to the west of Cambridge (8-9 inches), Princeton (5.91 inches), Mora (5.78 inches), and Cambridge (5.23 inches) were among the highest totals reported (table at the bottom of this report)

Saint Cloud Records Set

Meanwhile, we can count the records. Through 7 AM, the Saint Cloud Regional Airport had received 4.07 inches of rain, setting a 24 hour rainfall record for the month of October. The old record for the heaviest 24-hour October rainfall was 3.21 inches, set on October 6, 1950. 3.42 inches fell during the calendar day of October 4, again the highest total for any day in October. The old record for the October 4 was 1.59 inches, set in 2002. This 24-hour rainfall now ranks as the 8th heaviest rainfall during any 24 hours in the history of Saint Cloud observations. This is the heaviest rainfall in Saint Cloud since September 5-6, 2002 when 4.39 inches fell. This September storm did have heavier rainfall rates than the current storm because the bulk of that rain 3 years ago fell in a six-hour period.

How odd has this rainfall been? The normal amount of rain for the entire month of October in Saint Cloud is 2.24 inches, so the rain of the past 24 hours is 1 3/4 times the normal rain for the month. The total rainfall for the month so far, including the .05 inch that fell between 7 and 10 AM, is now 4.12 inches. This already ranks through four and a quarter days of October as the 14th wettest October of the 113 Octobers in Saint Cloud records and the most October rainfall since 1984. Saint Cloud is now less than half an inch away from cracking the ten wettest Octobers.

Remember when we were worried about a dry middle portion of the summer? Forget it. From August 26 through this morning, the Saint Cloud Airport has received 11.92 inches of rain, nearly triple the normal amount of 4.08 inches.
