On Track For Second Warmest June in Past 71 Years?

Through midnight Monday night, the June Saint Cloud average temperature has now climbed to 70.1°F. This is 5.0°F above the normal June average temperature of 65.1°F. With 3 days left to go in June, June 2005 has now moved into 12th place among the hottest Junes in Saint Cloud history (see table below). If we continue with the very warm low temperatures through Wednesday, we could warm further, perhaps putting June 2005 within reach of 7-10 place. On the other hand, much cooler air looks to move in on Thursday, so the average temperature may not go up that much more.

At the least, June 2005 would rank as the warmest June since 1988 (71.1°F; historic monthly temperatures here) Before 1988, we'd have to go back to 1932 to find a warmer June and we may pass 1932 before this month is over.

Contrary to popular opinion, we've been this warm because only June 16th has had a below average temperature. Even during our cloudy period during the start of the month, the sun would peek out most afternoons, allowing the high temperature to climb into the upper 70's and the persistent cloudiness and frequent storms kept low temperatures above normal for most of this month. Our June average high temperature of 80.5°F is only 3.2°F above normal, but the June average low temperature of 59.2°F is 6.3°F above normal.

All June 23 Saint Cloud Records Fall

June 23 wasn't just hot because we're not used to it; it was the warmest June 23 in Saint Cloud history. At 3:59 PM yesterday, the temperature hit 98°F, one degree above the old record of 97°F set in 1911 (June Saint Cloud records on my climate page). In addition, yesterday morning's low temperature was only 76°F (set at 5:16 AM), destroying the record warm low of 68°F, set in 1946, 1966, and 2003. How rare is a low temperature that stays at 75°F or higher? It was only the 51st day with a low this mild since Saint Cloud records began and the first such low since June 30, 2002. The combination of record high and record low did lead to a record warm average temperature. Yesterday's average temperature was 87°F breaking the old record warm average temperature of 81°F, set in 1910.
