Common Acronyms

Here in the College of Education and Learning Design, sometimes it might sound like we are speaking our own language. We do abbreviate a lot around here, but be assured we are not speaking in secret code. Here is a list of commonly used acronyms that translates the abbreviations (formed from the initial letters of other words) into the phrases that they represent.

CAL Communication Arts and Literature: a major offered through the College of Liberal Arts that prepares students to teach grades 5-12 how to experience language and communicate through reading and writing
CFS Child and Family Studies: a department within the College of Education and Learning Design offering an undergraduate major and minor and several graduate-level coursework options
COELD College of Education and Learning Design
edTPA A teaching performance assessment developed by faculty and staff at Stanford University. The assessment requires students to demonstrate mastery of knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a beginning teacher and is required by state law for teaching licensure in Minnesota.

HURL Human Relations and Multicultural Education: a department within the College of Education and Learning Design offering an undergraduate minor and a Master of Science degree in Social Responsibility
MDE Minnesota Department of Education
MTLE Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations
NES National Evaluation Series: a series of teacher certification exams
OCE Office of Clinical Experience
P-12 Shorthand for the years of education from pre-school through 12th grade
PELSB Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board
SPED Special Education: a department within the College of Education and Learning Design offering an undergraduate major and minor and several graduate-level coursework options
SST Social Studies Teaching: a major offered through the School of Public Affairs
TDEV Teacher Development: a department within the College of Education and Learning Design offering an undergraduate major and several graduate-level coursework options. This department also offers coursework and support for secondary licensure programs. 
TESL Teaching English as Second Language: an undergraduate minor program offered through the English department as well as a graduate program leading to licensure and/or a Master of Art degree
TEU Teacher Education Unit: a formal body that unites all teacher preparation programs at St. Cloud State University, regardless of the individual college or school in which the programs originate
