State-of-the-art equipment available in the Fitness Center and programs designed for people at every level of fitness. Our instructors are trained to push you to your limits, while meeting you at your ability level. They give you the confidence and guidance to improve.

Group X Class Descriptions

Cycle ‘N’ Abs: Cycle and abs will consist of 30 minutes on the bike followed by a great ab workout. Cycling will work on your strength, endurance, and help tone your body. You do not need to be a pro biker to participate in this class, all skill levels are welcome. This is a wonderful stress reliever and workout, be ready to sweat!

Cycle ‘N’ Yoga: Looking to torch a ton of calories in a short period of time? If so, indoor cycling is your new best friend. Pedal your way through a high intensity sprint, hill, and interval cycling workout as we hit the bike for some power-based training. Thirty minute ride followed by twenty minutes of Yoga and foam rolling.

Express Cycling: Fun and done! Training sessions last just 25 minutes! Get in, get fit, and get on with your day. Each express class is designed for maximum results in minimum time. Guaranteed to work the crabby out of you!

Express Abs: What do we want?! “Abs!” When do we want them?! “Now!” We know what you want, 25 minutes packed to the max with core-strengthening moves. Come to this class ready to work and you won’t leave disappointed.

Express Butts’N’Guts: This challenging 25 minute class is specifically designed to target your core and glutes. By combining a variety of different exercises and equipment, this class will shape your bod in no time. Great for those with busy schedules who need to maximize workout time.


Barre: Define and align your best body. Inspired by yoga and pilates, barre blends cardio, strength training, flexibility, balance and core conditioning in a total body workout that targets the hips, glutes, abs, and arms. One class and you will be hooked.  Rev up your exercise routine with Barre. You will not be disappointed.

Boxing: Get ready to punch and kick your way to a chiseled body! This class incorporates a mixture of cardiovascular exercises with boxing moves such as jabs, punches, hooks, blocks, kicks, and easy to follow combinations.

Muscle Pump: Balance your fitness routine by dedicating 1-2 days lifting weights! This muscle-fatiguing class works the entire body, torches calories, increases metabolism, and keeps your heart pumping. The repetitive, progressive style of Muscle Pump makes tracking progress and seeing gains clear and keeps you coming back for more!

Back-to-Basics Weightlifting: Not sure what to do in the fitness center? Intro to weightlifting here I come! This class will take you through the basics and fundamentals of different weight-bearing exercises in the fitness center. Each week will be focused on learning the proper techniques of movements such as squatting, lunges, presses, and curls. To ensure we have space, please sign up for a slot in the Fitness Center prior to class.

Fit & Ready Weight Training: Got a weightlifting competition coming up? Or just want to lift some heavy weights? This is the class for you! Movements will be focused on Olympic Lifts such as Squatting, Benching and Deadlifts as well as other strengthening accessory movements. SCSU now has the opportunity for you to train with a certified weightlifting coach on site to help you reach your goals. To ensure we have space, please sign up for a slot in the Fitness Center prior to class.


Sweat & Tread: Brrr! Minnesota winters are upon us. That means it’s time to take your run inside! Meet us in the Fitness Center for a heart pumping, muscle sculpting mash that will leave you wanting more. How it works: run/walk or jog on the treadmill then get ready for a few quick sets of strength movements. It’ll be a perfect workout to increase your endurance while adding those extra muscle-toning exercises.

Instructor Master Class: Designed to educate and challenge Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers. We are inviting you to join in. Learn new moves and techniques while getting to know your instructors. Each week a different instructor will lead. The style of workout will be posted on Facebook!

R.I.P.P.E.D.™: The One Stop Body ShopTM is a total body, plateau-proof fitness formula that pushes your cardio into high gear and keeps your body guessing. Named for the different components of the workout, R.I.P.P.E.D. gives you Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics, and Endurance, while helping you attain and maintain your physique!

Zumba™: Skip the workout – join the party! Inspired by Latin music, Zumba moves, grooves, and tones your entire body. This killer core workout gets your heart pumping and spices up your hour at the gym. All fitness levels invited!

Step 'N' Sculpt: Mix up your cardio routine to challenge your body and mind! Step alternates between choreographed cardio sessions and intensive muscle conditioning, providing a total-body workout.

Yoga: Exhilarate your body and mind with Yoga. Yoga instruction will emphasize safe alignment in postures, while enhancing whole-body strength, flexibility, and balance. Classes include centering, warm-ups, sun salutations, standing and seated poses, and relaxation. Bring your practice alive and meet new people along the way.

We've designed private workout classes for clubs, athletic teams, residence halls, sororities and academic classes. We can do it for you too!

Why I love Group X: When I first started at St. Cloud State, I didn’t know anybody and didn’t know where to begin to get to know anyone. While walking around in Atwood I came across a group fitness booth and struck up a conversation with one of the yoga instructors.

Being inflexible and having slight back pain from my prior job I didn’t think yoga was for me. I took the chance and decided that one morning class couldn’t hurt. That’s all it took and I was hooked! I went to as many classes as I could make it to.

Once my favorite instructor graduated, my eyes were opened to the possibility of becoming an instructor and teach the class I love so much.

I left St. Cloud State and started my big kid job, but I couldn’t find the Group X experience I’ve come to love. So, I’m back teaching as a volunteer and loving my job once again!

It can be difficult going to the gym and coming up with workouts on your own. With Group X, you don’t have to. Each class provides challenging modifications for advanced athletes as well as lower modifications for those just starting their fitness journey.

Become an Instructor

Certification and Application

We can help you become certified as a group exercise instructor at St. Cloud State University.

Components of the comprehensive weekend warrior course include:

  • Anatomy.
  • Counting and cueing.
  • Class format.
  • Choreography.

A nationally certified exercise trainer will teach prospective instructors to lead:

  • Hi/lo impact cardio.
  • Step.
  • Aqua.
  • Body sculpt.
  • Cardio kick.
  • Yoga.
  • Pilates.
  • Cycle.
  • Stability ball.
  • BOSU.
  • Other fitness trends. 

At the completion of the class, St. Cloud State University participants can try out to join our Group Exercise team.

Agenda

Full attendance is mandatory.

  • Mandatory Information Meeting
    • This meeting includes important details containing outline of the program, expectations and homework for the week.
  • Weekend Warrior Training
    • Day 1:Participants will learn the basics of counting, cueing, Hi/Lo, and anatomy.
    • Day 2: Review counting and cueing. Introduce: Kickboxing, Cycle, Step, Toning, H.I.T. (High Intensity Training), Bootcamp Principles, and class format.
    • Day 3: Review counting and cueing. Introduce Yoga, Pilates, and aqua. Interview those trying out to become a SCSU Group Fitness Instructor. Take anatomy quiz. Practice for practical assessment.
  • Follow
    • Assessment: Perform a 5-7 minute demonstration routine.
