English Proficiency Requirements
English Requirements and Exemptions
To ensure academic success, all international applicants—whether applying to on-campus or online graduate programs—must demonstrate English language proficiency.
You may be exempt from submitting an English proficiency exam if you are a US citizen or permanent resident OR you hold a bachelor’s or graduate degree from an accredited institution in the United States, English-speaking Canada, or a country where English is the sole official language.
Accepted Exams & Minimum Scores
We accept the following English proficiency exams. Admission decisions are based on score tiers:
TOEFL (iBT) (Updated Scoring Begins January 2026)
- 4.5+: Full admission for enrollment to any graduate program
- 4.00 (no subscore below 4.0): Provisional admission + required completion of EAP 511 & EAP 512
- 3.5: Eligible for Conditional Language Admissionand to complete Intensive English Center (IEC) Level 5 before starting graduate coursework
- Below 3.5: Not eligible for graduate admission
Legacy TOEFL iBT Scores
- 100+: Full admission
- 79–99 (no subscore below 17): Provisional admission + EAP 511 & EAP 512
- 61–78: Conditional Language Admission + (IEC) Level 5
- Below 61: Not eligible for graduate admission
- 7.5+: Full admission
- 6.5–7.0: Provisional admission + EAP 511 & EAP 512
- 5.5–6.0: Conditional Language Admission + (IEC) Level 5
- Below 5.5: Not eligible for graduate admission
LanguageCERT Academic (Pilot Program)
- 75+: Full admission
- 70–74: Provisional admission + EAP 511 & EAP 512 (pending placement test results)
- 65–69: Conditional Language Admission + (IEC) Level 5
- Below 65: Not eligible for graduate admission
Not Accepted
- IELTS General Training
- Duolingo English Test
- Medium of Instruction or Language of Instruction letters
Note: Some graduate programs may still require additional testing.
