Required Preadmission Courses

  • ENGL 190/191 (4 credits) Intro to Rhetorical and Analytical Writing
  • CMST 192 (3 credits) Intro to Communication Studies
  • MATH 193 OR STAT 193 (3 credits) Mathematical or Statistical Thinking
  • PHIL 194 (3 credits) Critical Reasoning
  • PHIL 212 (3 credits Moral Problems and Theories
  • PSY 240 (3 credits) Developmental Psychology
  • SOC 160 (3 credits) Principles of Sociology
  • BIOL 202 (4 credits) Human Anatomy and Physiology I

  • CHEM 151 (5 credits) General, Organic and Biochemistry
There is a minimum GPA of 2.75 for preadmission coursework

Additional information about some of the preadmission courses:

  • Math 193/STAT 193 are required for the pre-nursing major. If a student has taken college algebra or any higher level math, this will be accepted in place of Stat 193 or Math 193.
  • Placement for CHEM 151 is dependent upon math ACT or Accuplacer math scores. Please visit the Undergraduate Placement Testing Center to register for your placement exam.
  • There is a placement exam for BIOL 202. Some students will take BIOL 103 or BIOL 151 as a prerequisite to BIOL 202, if they do not pass the placement exam. Please visit the Undergraduate Placement Testing Center to register for your placement exam.

Transferring to St. Cloud State

If you are transferring to St. Cloud State University and have completed an AA/BA/BS degree, the coursework that is required for acceptance into the Nursing program is as follows:

  • PSY 240 (3 credits) Developmental Psychology
  • BIOL 202 (4 credits) Human Anatomy and Physiology I
  • BIOL 204 (4 credits) Human Anatomy and Physiology II
  • BIOL 206 (4 credits) Introductory Microbiology
  • CHEM 151 (5 credits) General, Organic and Biochemistry
There is a minimum GPA of 2.75 for preadmission coursework

Depending on your previous degree, you may have already completed one or more of these courses, please refer to Transferology to confirm transfer coursework.

Early Admission Program

The qualifications to be designated as a First Year Early Admission Nursing Program Student are as follows:

  1. Cumulative ACT score of 26 or higher-score must be submitted to St. Cloud State no later than January of the student’s senior year in high school
  2. High School cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher

The requirements to remain a First Year Early Admission Nursing Program Student are as follows:

  1. Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout preadmission coursework
  2. Receive a C or better in all preadmission coursework
  3. Have not withdrawn (“W”) from any nursing preadmission courses

Students will be notified by mail if they have been selected as one of the First Year Early Admission Nursing Program students in February or March of their senior year in high school.

If a student were to not uphold the requirements for the First Year Early Admission Nursing Program they would no longer be eligible to be a part of the First Year Early Admission Nursing Program and would have to compete for one of the 40 spots in the program.

Preadmission Courses

Early Admission students are subject to the same preadmission and liberal education course requirements as found in the University Catalog.

Please note, due to placement exams and prerequisite courses, a student who is enrolled in the First Year Early Admission Nursing Program is not guaranteed to complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing in four years.
