Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Oversight of Animal Research and Teaching
The St. Cloud State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees research, teaching, and testing activities involving live vertebrate animals to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as university policies and assurances. The committee reviews and evaluates laboratory-based animal activities and selected field-based animal use projects conducted on campus or utilizing university facilities, equipment, or resources.
The IACUC assesses animal care and use activities in accordance with the following standards and regulations:
- Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (8th ed., National Research Council, 2011)
- Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NIH, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, 2015)
- Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching (4th ed., American Society of Animal Science, 2020)
- Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations (November 2013)
As the University's principal advisory body on the humane care and use of animals, the IACUC reviews concerns, allegations, and complaints related to animal activities and has the authority to require protocol modifications or suspend animal use activities that are not conducted in accordance with approved procedures, institutional policies, or applicable regulations.

About St. Cloud State University's IACUC
Responsibility for the University's animal care and use program is shared among the Institutional Official, the Attending Veterinarian, and the IACUC. Together, they establish and maintain policies and assurances, monitor program performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and support the ethical conduct of research, teaching, and testing activities involving live vertebrate animals.
