Session Descriptions

Keynote Address: Teaching Ethical Professional and Culturally Humble Behavior Through Situational Role Play and Feedback

Location: Voyageurs Room, Atwood Memorial Center

Presenters: Dr. Michele Traub and Dr. Odessa Luna, Department of Community Psychology, Counseling & Family Therapy

Practical skills in applied behavior analysis (ABA) are typically taught using a combination of didactic instruction, scripted role plays, and feedback. However, trainees often require additional feedback and booster training when confronted with real-life scenarios. This project incorporated role-play scenarios to which students must adapt and respond appropriately into common clinical interactions. This added layer of experiential learning was designed to teach situational awareness, cultural humility, problem-solving, and professional behavior by exposing students to challenging and unexpected situations that may be encountered in post-graduation clinical practice.

Equity 2030

Location: Voyageurs Room, Atwood Memorial Center

Presenters:
Chocoletta Simpson, Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX
Ajay Panicker, Associate Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs

In 2019, the Minn State system established closing all educational equity gaps by the year 2030 as a key priority. In particular, the work of Equity 2030 was to focus on the achievement gaps experienced by low income and first-generation students, and students of color. The SCSU community endorsed this goal and committed to focusing on individualized student success. However, educational equity gaps, in the form of differences in retention and graduation rates, continue to remain. This session is an invitation to be part of collective thinking about the work that must happen at SCSU to reduce the gaps.
