Middle School Science Education

The Middle School Science Education program prepares students to teach middle school science in the state of Minnesota, including chemistry, earth and space science, life science, and physical science. The major fulfills the coursework required by the Minnesota Department of Education to receive a Grades 5-8 science teaching license for the state of Minnesota. The coursework includes courses in biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space, astronomy, professional education pedagogy, and science methods.
A minor is available to pair with any of SCSU other education-based programs allowing for dual licensure.

- Strong foundation in physical sciences and mathematics.
- Hands-on experience through laboratories, fieldwork, research, and student teaching opportunities.
- Active student organizations that engage earth science students socially and in community, state and world issues related to weather, wind energy, and water.
- Opportunities to participate in community-based education outreach events, including Huskie Hack, Huskies Invent, and the annual Research Colloquium.
- Faculty engaged in research that addresses current issues and topics relevant to changes in the Earth.
Program Distinctions
- All teaching licensure programs approved by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB).
- Membership in Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).
- A full-sized planetarium in the Robert H. Wick Science Building.
- Support for teacher candidates through the first three years of their first teaching position.
- Select laboratories and courses held in the Integrated Science and Engineering Laboratory Facility (ISELF).
