Honors Program

Welcome

The Honors community at St. Cloud State University welcomes you.

St. Cloud State University’s Honors Program is a highly selective interdisciplinary program which provides the liberal arts portion of a student’s bachelor’s degree. With more than 2,400 freshmen entering St. Cloud State University each fall only 200 freshman appointments are available in the University Honors Program.

Through participation in the University Honors Program you will find a learning community that is intellectually rigorous and personally and culturally enriching, one that will foster your learning and discovery through independent and collaborative inquiry.  The University Honors Program offers small classes (average 20 students).  Your honors courses will challenge you to connect the classroom with the larger world by broadening your social and cultural experiences and promoting civic responsibility, leadership development and community and campus involvement.

Honors provides an alternative to the SCSU general education program. It is designed to appeal specifically to academically talented students. Courses feature unique subject matter and focus on experiential and integrated learning, discussion, writing, and collaborative projects. Honors students are active participants in their education as they research, explore, and collaborate with Honors faculty.

Benefits include:

  • Priority registration for classes after first semester
  • Smaller, innovative classes focusing on discussion and utilizing speakers, field trips, projects, and team teaching. Average class size: 20 students.
  • A voice in how the program develops and operates: curriculum, evaluation, and admissions committees are all student-directed.
  • The opportunity to study at Oxford University, England
  • Compatibility with any academic major or minor.
  • The option of living on an Honors floor in the residence halls, enriching friendships within the Honors learning community.
  • Honors scholarships for top students, including the Deann Griebel award for community involvement.
  • A forum to formally present research projects, both regionally and nationally, through participation in the National Collegiate Honors Council and Midwestern Regional Honors Conference and the All Honors Research Colloquium.

A resume booster, giving you the edge with employers, graduate schools, med schools, or law schools.
