Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the university proposing a restructuring?
The restructuring is intended to strengthen academic programs, improve operational efficiency, and address a projected $14.5 million budget shortfall over the next two years. It reflects a commitment to long-term sustainability and student success.
What are the key changes being proposed?
Key changes include:
- Transitioning from five colleges to three
- Reassigning University College functions
- Streamlining leadership roles in Academic Affairs
- Reducing approximately 89 FTE staff positions, primarily through vacancies
How will staff positions be affected?
About 65% of the proposed staff reductions will be absorbed through existing vacancies. The remaining 32 FTE reductions may decrease as planning continues. Most changes will take effect when the new college structures are implemented.
Will there be layoffs?
Limited layoffs are anticipated. The university is committed to transparency and contractual compliance and is prioritizing vacancy absorption to minimize direct impact on current employees.
How will academic programs be impacted?
The restructuring aims to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and improve student navigation. Academic programs will continue to be supported, and any changes will be communicated clearly and collaboratively.
Who is involved in the planning process?
The proposal is being guided by university leadership, the Steering Committee, the President’s Cabinet, and the Provost’s Council. These groups are working together to ensure the process is inclusive and aligned with institutional goals.
Why eliminate the Plymouth campus if the programs there are doing well?
We are transitioning academic offerings to a community college partner campus when our lease ends in 2027. This maintains access to programs while reducing costs, allowing us to invest those resources in strengthening our main campus operations.
How can I provide feedback or ask questions?
Feedback is welcomed and encouraged. Opportunities include campus listening sessions, both in-person and virtual, emailing feedback@stcloudstate.edu, and direct communication with college and university leadership. Details on how to participate are available on the Feedback page.
When will the restructuring take place?
Implementation will occur in phases, with most changes aligned to the launch of the new college structures in July 2026. A detailed timeline will be shared as planning progresses.
What if the plan doesn't work?
We are committed to evidence-based decision making. If elements are not achieving the intended outcomes, we’ll make adjustments. This is an evolution, not a revolution, and we’ll remain responsive to our community’s needs.
