About the Intensive English Center

Mission

The Intensive English Center at SCSU provides English language instruction for individuals whose primary language is one other than English and who wish to improve their English language skills for the purpose of pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a university or college in the United States. Additionally, the IEC provides introductions to general American and academic American culture. Through these two endeavors students in the IEC are given the opportunity to grow intellectually and emotionally as they learn to successfully communicate in English and learn to live in a different culture.

Vision

The IEC contributes significantly to SCSU’s overall diversity and provides opportunities for cross-cultural and intercultural communication, leaving a life changing and lasting impact on the SCSU student, faculty, and staff communities. Through its instructional and curriculum experiences, the IEC assists the Department of Humanities and, specifically, the MA-TESL program in providing practical, relevant teaching experience for graduate students pursuing a career in ESL. Furthermore, the IEC actively supports visiting scholars from other countries who wish to learn more about the teaching of English as a Second Language.

Karina Karieva

Karina Karieva

Karina Karieva has been an English teacher for over five years. She began her career as an English tutor in Russia, where she quickly discovered her passion for both learning and teaching English. Karina incorporates gamification and interactive methods into her classes and values hard work, perseverance, and dedication, while also emphasizing kindness, support, and understanding.

Karina has taught a wide range of learners, including children, teenagers, and adults, in individual, pair, and group settings. She strongly believes that learners should begin speaking as soon as possible and therefore provides abundant opportunities for speaking practice. At the same time, she prioritizes accuracy as much as fluency, regarding it as a reflection of one’s proficiency, intelligence, and education.

Currently, Karina is pursuing her master’s degree in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) at Saint Cloud State University. Since arriving in the United States, she has traveled to seven states and developed a special fondness for Boston, particularly admiring its red-brick architecture for its simplicity and elegance.

Outside the classroom, Karina enjoys cooking and making food from scratch, going to the gym regularly, and engaging in meaningful conversations with friends about philosophy and deep topics. She also enjoys planning her days with purpose and is currently working toward obtaining her first driver’s license.
