Events for February 25, 2009Concert by the Binhai Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble Ritsche Auditorium, Stewart Hall, SCSU Campus Performing on tradtional Chinese instruments, eight students from Nankai University will be putting on a live show of Chinese music. 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Events for Friday, February 27, 20097:00 to 8:30 a.m. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce organizes the Grow Minnesota! program and local chambers work with the state chamber to host these breakfast events around the state. The February, 2009, breakfast will be held at SCSU coincident with the 47th Winter Institute. The breakfast will feature the three Winter Institute speakers and David Olson, Chair of the MnSCU Board of Trustees. Dr. Woo is one of the World’s leading experts on the East Asian economies, particularly China, Indonesia and Malaysia. He has advised the U.S. Treasury Department, the IMF, World Bank and the United Nations. He specializes in exchange rates, economic growth, regional economic disparity and financial sector development. Dr. Woo’s expertise is frequently sought by the U.S. and Chinese governments and he has published many articles and books on the Chinese economy. Dr. Lardy is one of the World’s leading experts on the Chinese economy. Prior to joining the Peterson Institute, he was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and was director of the Henry M.Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He has published books and many articles on various aspects of the Chinese economy, including exchange rates, growth, economic reforms and agriculture. He is frequently interviewed by publications such as The Wall Street Journal for his expertise on China. The speaker presentations will be preceded by a performance by The Binhai Chinese Traditional Music Ensemble. 12:00 am to 1:30 p.m. During the luncheon, there will be a performance by The Binhai Chinese Traditional Music Ensemble.
Dr. Hou has made outstanding contributions to the study of labor markets and the consequences of economic reform in China. His research focuses on the Chinese economy, as well as labor economics and international trade/finance. He is Past President of the Chinese Economists Society, President-Elect of the Western Social Science Association and an officer of Western Economic Association International International.
