2016 That Takes Ovaries Cast

V-Day and Vagina Monologues

That Takes Ovaries/ The Vagina Monologues

From 2000 to 2013, St. Cloud State University hosted an annual production of The Vagina Monologues with proceeds donated to local programs that directly serve victims of sexual and domestic violence.  Hundreds of women students from St. Cloud State University have performed and provided leadership for this international event.

The Vagina Monologues (http://www.eveensler.org/plays/the-vagina-monologues), written and created by Eve Ensler, is made up of monologues read by a varying number of actors.  Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body.  A recurring theme throughout the production is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the embodiment of individuality.

In 1998, Ensler launched V-Day (http://www.vday.org), a global non-profit that has raised over $50 million for women's anti-violence groups. The Women’s Center and Women’s Action team up with students to perform The Vagina Monologues and raise money through the V-day campaign for local organizations that share the mission of ending violence against women and girls.

In February 2014, the Women’s Center debuted a production of That Takes Ovaries (http://www.thattakesovaries.org/), a play that celebrates bold and courageous women and their equally bold and courageous acts, adapted from the book of the same name. In April 2015, The Women's Center joined 9 other college and universities across the state in inaugurating SLUT: The Play (http://www.sluttheplay.com/), which problematizes victim blaming, slut shaming and use of the word "slut." These events feature student actors, producers and directors. Students, faculty, staff and St. Cloud community members are welcome and encouraged to participate in these annual theatrical productions.
