National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The Women’s Center, often in collaboration with other departments and organizations, commemorates National Domestic Violence Awareness Month during the month of October. Throughout the month, we host and highlight events in order to raise awareness about dating and domestic violence. Some of our past programs and events for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month include:

In Her Shoes: An interactive activity which places participants in the shoes of women facing domestic violence situations.

The Red Flag Campaign: Small red flags are placed throughout campus in order to increase awareness about dating violence and domestic violence. Presentations about the Red Flag Campaign are available for classes and groups.

Art of Recovery: This exhibit featured the visual and literary artwork of Minnesota crime victims who have used art as a means to respond, explore, express or heal. The exhibition commemorates National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NVCRW), April 22- 28, and is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs and Minnesota State Arts Board.  The Women’s Center, Central MN Sexual Assault Center, University Program Board and others collaborated to host this exhibit at St. Cloud State University in 2012.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981, by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were conducted at the local, state, and national levels. Congress designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989.
