SCSU community mourns loss of Dr. Carrie Holmes

Dr. Carrie HolmesThe university mourns the loss of Dr. Carrie Ann Luetters Holmes (1969-2020), who passed away suddenly Friday, Oct. 30.

Dr. Holmes worked as a physician in the St. Cloud State Medical Clinic since August and embraced the support she gave our students in the challenging environment of a pandemic. Carrie joined the campus community this summer with her husband Sean Holmes, the Huskies Men’s Soccer Coach, and their three sons.

“In our hiring of Coach Holmes in February, St. Cloud State benefited doubly with Dr. Holmes’ arrival in SCSU’s Medical Clinical. Carrie was a highly competent and compassionate professional who saw physical and mental health as foundational to a successful life. She was excited to support our students’ growth and preparation through their medical care,” said Athletics Director Heather Weems.

Prior to arriving at St. Cloud State, she had a long career in private practice in Des Moines, Iowa. She specialized in general family medicine and women’s health issues. One of her interests, through her work at St. Cloud State, was finding ways to help young adults transition to taking responsibility for their health by improving health literacy and education on the benefits of self-management and preventative care.

“In her short time here, she was a tremendous help to our team and her loss has been felt deeply by our staff,” said Dr. Brent Nielsen, Medical Clinic director.

The Dr. Carrie Holmes Memorial Fund has been created in her honor to support women in health sciences.

In addition to being a dedicated mother, wife, daughter, friend and doctor, Dr. Carrie Holmes was committed personally and professionally to making life better for others. True to this commitment, Carrie will live on through the recipients of her donated organs. And furthermore, the impression she made on our campus and the impact of the memorial fund to support women in health sciences will be lasting.
