Teacher Licensure

Pedagogy and Content Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pass all the Pedagogy and Content-Area tests in order to graduate?

No. Passing the Pedagogy and Content tests is not a requirement to graduate from St. Cloud State University. However, it is a requirement to obtain an initial teaching license in the state of Minnesota. Before applying for your teaching license, you must have received the official score reports (email with barcode) for all required Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams.

When do you recommend taking Pedagogy and Content-Area tests?

There is no set time period for when to take the Pedagogy and Content-Area tests. However, the tests contain material covered in your education coursework. Candidates will have higher chance of passing the tests after taking all major program courses. Often Pedagogy and Content-Area tests are taken the semester before graduation, during student teaching. It is best to communicate with your academic advisor and plan ahead should you need to retake any tests.

Are there any study resources available for Pedagogy and Content-Area tests?

There are study guides and practice questions available for check out by current St. Cloud State students in the Miller Center Library.

Reviewing the notes and materials from your major program courses is also recommended.

Official MTLE study guides and practice tests can be purchased through the official MTLE website which is operated by Pearson Education.

What if I am adding a new licensure area to an existing Minnesota teaching license?

If you are already licensed in the state of Minnesota and are adding another license, you only have to take the content knowledge test in the new licensure field.
