Common Acronyms

Here in the School of Education, sometimes it might sound like we are speaking our own language. We do abbreviate a lot around here, but be assured we are not speaking in secret code. Here is a list of commonly used acronyms that translates the abbreviations (formed from the initial letters of other words) into the phrases that they represent.
BOT    Board of Teaching
CAL Communication Arts and Literature: a major offered through the College of Liberal Arts that prepares students to teach grades 5-12 how to experience language and communicate through reading and writing
CFS Child and Family Studies: a department within the School of Education offering an undergraduate major and minor and several graduate-level coursework options
CTC Curriculum and Technology Center
edTPA A teaching performance assessment developed by faculty and staff at Stanford University. The assessment requires students to demonstrate mastery of knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a beginning teacher and is required by state law for teaching licensure in Minnesota.

HPE Health and Physical Education: a teaching major offered through the School of Health and Human Services
HURL Human Relations and Multicultural Education: a department within the School of Education offering an undergraduate minor and a Master of Science degree in Social Responsibility
IM Information Media: a department within the School of Education offering an undergraduate certificate and several graduate-level coursework options
MDE Minnesota Department of Education
MTLE Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations
NES National Evaluation Series: a series of teacher certification exams
OCE Office of Clinical Experience
P-12 Shorthand for the years of education from pre-school through 12th grade
SOE School of Education
SPED Special Education: a department within the School of Education offering an undergraduate major and minor and several graduate-level coursework options
SST Social Studies Teaching: a major offered through the School of Public Affairs
TDEV Teacher Development: a department within the School of Education offering an undergraduate major and several graduate-level coursework options. This department also offers coursework and support for secondary licensure programs. 
Tk20 A comprehensive assessment planning and reporting system used for a variety of purposes at St. Cloud State. Teacher candidates use Tk20 throughout their degree programs primarily to track information related to field experience and student teaching. 
TESL Teaching English as Second Language: an undergraduate minor program offered through the English department as well as a graduate program leading to licensure and/or a Master of Art degree
TEU Teacher Education Unit: a formal body that unites all teacher preparation programs at St. Cloud State University, regardless of the individual college or school in which the programs originate
