CLEAR Decision Framework
A practical tool for business decisions
The CLEAR Decision Framework
Most business decisions don't go wrong because founders are careless. They go wrong because the real decision was never clearly named and people spend time and energy on the wrong question entirely.
This framework gives you five honest questions to work through on your own. It won't decide for you. It slows you down just enough to see clearly.
One thing to know: Sometimes the right answer is not yet. If you work through this and realize you don't have enough information to act, that's the framework working. Waiting to gather more is a legitimate business decision.
The Five Steps
See it in Practice
Darius has been freelancing on the side for two years and needs to decide whether to go full time.
Darius works through CLEAR:
- Clarify: Should I leave my job to do this full time — and if so, when?
- Look: Leave now. Wait six months. Raise rates first. Stop taking new clients.
- Estimate: Leaving now equals no buffer. Raising rates first tests the market before he jumps.
- Act: Raise rates for two new clients this month. If both say yes, start saving.
- Review: In 60 days: did both accept? Is savings growing? If yes, set a leave date.
Sit with These
- What is the exact decision I need to make — written as a specific question, not a worry?
- What are my three realistic options, including one I haven't fully considered?
- For each option, what could it cost, create, or break?
- What is on specific thing I'll do next, and by when?
- When will I check if this is working and what will I look for?
