Student Accessibility Services
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Student Responsibilities
Our goal is to provide quality interpreting services, advocacy and educational access for all Deaf/Hard of hearing students at SCSU. You can assist us in this process.
In order to receive services, you must:
- Complete an application for support services. Applications are available in the Student Accessibility Services office.
- Provide documentation of your disability. Documentation may include: an audiology report, a medical evaluation, an I.E.P. from high school, or reports from other colleges. This documentation must be provided within two weeks of your request for an interpreter. If the documentation is not received, support services will be suspended until the documentation is provided to Student Accessibility Services.
- Register as soon as possible before the start of the semester, preferably during priority registration, to insure that an interpreter will be available for the first class day. If you register late, we will do our best to assign an interpreter for the first day of class, but we cannot guarantee an interpreter will be available. During the semester, you must inform the SAS office if you drop, add or withdraw from a class. Before making a schedule change, you must check with the office manager to be sure an interpreter will be available.
- Arrive on time for class. Please email the SAS office at sas@stcloudstate.edu if you know you will arrive late. Interpreters will wait 15 minutes before leaving. Once the interpreter has left due to a no show, he/she will not return to that class/appointment. The interpreters will not attend any of your other classes for the day unless you contact the SAS office.
- Notify Student Accessibility Services at sas@stcloudstate.edu if you will not be attending class or a scheduled meeting. If you will not be attending class, you must notify the SAS office at least 20 minutes prior to the start of a day class or prior to 4:00 p.m. for an evening class. If you miss a class three consecutive times without notifying the SAS office, your interpreting services for that class will be discontinued until you meet with the director to reinstate your services.
- Request an interpreter through the SAS office for required meetings or activities. You should request interpreters for non-classroom activities at least 2 weeks in advance. If you request an interpreter at the last minute, we will do our best to assign one, but cannot guarantee that an interpreter will be available.
We hope that your educational experience here at SCSU is both positive and successful. Please let us know if you need any further assistance.
