St. Cloud State and its partner World Instructor Training Schools offer instruction in one of the hottest health occupations.

As a WITS nationally certified personal trainer, you can help fill the shortage in the field while launching a new career and earning a great living.

Six-week course

The course consists of:

  • 16 hours of lecture on topics such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment
  • 16 hours of hands-on practical training labs with role playing drills on exercise, presentation skills and more
  • Access to online tutorials and study tools

Level 1 - Nationally Certified Personal Trainer:  Successfully complete the written and practical exams.  CPR/AED required.

Level 2 - Nationally Certified Personal Trainer:  Successfully complete your Level 1 exams followed by a 30 hour internship that will help you connect to local employers.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Textbook purchase before class starts
  • CPR/AED certification must be completed before the SCSU/WITS Level 1 certificate can be awarded


To obtain the Level 2 certification it is a student's responsibility to arrange and complete an internship. We provide a list of pre-approved facilities to help with finding an internship. Approval for an alternate location is a simple process.

Job placement

Most students get hired directly by internship sites. While we do not secure jobs for our certified trainers, demand is high and clubs often request our list of graduates.
