“When Dorothy introduced the Fundamental Four to me a few years ago, I was struggling in my sales career as well as in my personal life. While the concept seemed logical, I admit in the beginning that I was a bit skeptical of CYC’s simplicity. I thought to myself, “How could the key to success be this easy?”

In order to better understand it, I visited several businesses to see if it was a theory or could be seen in action. To my amazement, my most favorite places to shop, dine, and lodge all demonstrated these four values. Conversely, the businesses that didn’t demonstrate them were places I was unconsciously averse to. After observing the Fundamental Four in action, I felt ready to work with the ideas in my own life.

I started with mood because I had no knowledge base to understand how my mood could influence business or my life situation. Besides, the other three seemed so obvious that they were just a “given”. I already had plenty of experience on the impact of those three (or the lack thereof). I quickly recognized that the greatest contributor to my less-than-ideal life situation was my mood. It was generally down and brought about circumstances congruent with it. When I began to choose a pleasant mood, my life experiences began to change, too.

Many of the unpleasant things in my life began to disappear with seemingly little effort on my end. Having been single for a while, a delightful new companion emerged in the most interesting of circumstances. Then, a competitor presented me with a career opportunity in management that offered many advantages over where I had been employed. This new role gave me the ability to implement the Fundamental Four in the location that I managed. Over the next two and a half years, our sales revenue increased eight times and profits grew to new heights. Along the way, I was promoted to oversee that division of our company and a year later, yet another division.

Other by-products were completely unexpected. I began to notice that people really enjoyed being in my presence. I was told on many occasions how I made people feel good, or how I lightened their load within a few short minutes. My boss even said he always felt better after talking to me. My income increased considerably. I was recognized with my employer’s Outstanding Leadership Award for having moved the needle the most for the company and the industry.

I am completely confident that these rewarding experiences were all a result of experimenting with and implementing the Fundamental Four into my personal and professional life. An old proverb says, “Knowledge is just a rumor until it lives in the body.” I encourage you to read and use this knowledge, allowing it to live in you. It will change your life!”

“I have had the opportunity to benefit as a mentee of Ms. Dorothy Billingsly as part of the American College of Healthcare Executive (ACHE) mentorship program. During this time, I was very fortunate to have used CYC to chart my future career. As a mother to two little kids, trying to transition to a full-time career into my chosen career path was not only overwhelming, but also quite unnerving at times. After having chosen to take a 2-year break to stay home with my kids, I knew that my priorities had changed since the last time I was job-searching. Following the CYC guide helped me think through what I wanted my new work profile to be like. This was a tool that helped me to not settle for just anything that was available, but to strive for exactly what I wanted. I did not instantly land my dream job, but it definitely gave me the confidence and reassurance that I needed while I waited and continued to develop my skills and gained relevant experience.”

“While I was a student at the University of Central Oklahoma, Mrs. Billingsly visited our school and shared some exciting tips on how to plan and develop a fulfilling career. At the time, I had not decided on my major and struggled to figure out ways to blend my passion for art with my career. She encouraged us to be courageous and follow your passion. In turn, I decided to pursue a career in advertising as an art director and only two weeks after graduation, I began my career in Oakland, California."

I met Dorothy Billingsly during the first class of a business management program at a small local college. My employer at the time had implied that I was a potential candidate for management at our company; he also said I needed to hone my leadership skills before they would consider me for a promotion. The business management program was their suggestion to develop those skills.

Initially, I had no idea what my employer expected of me. I would think, “I have what it takes to be a leader. It’s easy to tell people what to do and all I need is for someone to give me the authority to make people listen.” After all, leadership is just a new title and a larger paycheck, right? WRONG! Simply telling people what to do might get a job done, but that approach lacks the catalyst of inspiration. Inspiration can ignite a team to creatively achieve a common aim, while also providing the flexibility for the team members to fulfill purposes of their own.

The information in Chart Your Course personally gave me the tools to find purpose, inspire others, and build a successful career. In other words, it gave me a strong foundation. With these tools I've been able to build my career into a structure that financially provides for my family, while also supporting a healthy work/life balance. Learning how to define my success and presenting my skills adequately to other leaders has opened doors that would have otherwise stayed closed. These open doors have led to steady pay increases, promotions, and a comfortable lifestyle that allows me to enjoy time with my two beautiful children and wonderful wife.

Thanks to Dorothy for this amazing adventure of discovery and to Dr. Dave Harris for our initial introduction. Carefully follow the words ahead and be honest with yourself when answering the questions. Today is the day you start building your personal version of success.
