Art and Essay Contest

The Dexter R. Stanton Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art & Essay Contest is the legacy of St. Cloud State University graduate student, Dexter Stanton. It began as a way to engage young people in participating in Dr. King’s Day of Service in St. Cloud, and to publicly recognize and reward their artistic, writing, and leadership abilities. More than 150 entries were received for last year’s contest and the numbers are expected to grow!

In its fifth year, the call for art and essay invites St. Cloud area K-12 and college students to reflect on MLK’s words and interpret them for a chance to win 1 of 22 awards.

Entry guidelines, quotes, guiding questions, and links for essay submission can be found on the Community Anti-Racism Education Initiative webpage at Artwork and essays will be exhibited in the community and the day of the breakfast celebration.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. is the deadline. Applicants will be notified of award status by January 12, 2018. The awards will be presented at the SCSU MLK Breakfast on January 15, 2018 in Halenbeck Hall at 8 a.m.

If you are not entering the contest and have an appreciation for art, writing and social justice, please contact us on being a volunteer juror. You can expect to give 4-5 hours of your time.
