The Dexter R. Stanton Essay and Visual Art Contest

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by submitting an essay or artwork inspired by his work. St Cloud area students are invited to express their thoughts through essay or artwork to be shared at the 6th Annual MLK Breakfast on 1/21/19 at the River’s Edge Convention Center. Work created will display at the Convention Center in January and February.

Elementary & Middle School Quote Guide

Based on the quote by MLK, how can you stand up or use your voice when someone is treated unkindly/unfairly? How does that action help MLK’s dream come closer to reality?

High School & College Quote Guide

Based on the quote by MLK, how can you stand up or use your voice against the apathy of racism and war? How does that action help MLK’s dream come closer to reality?

Elementary School

(grades K-4)
Ten $20 Awards

Visual Art: Create a 2D piece of artwork on paper that visually expresses your interpretation of the quote above. Only 2D mediums on paper. Artwork should be no larger than 24”.

Middle School

(grades 5-8)
Six $50 Awards

Essay: 200 word statement guided by the quote and answering the questions.

High School

Four $75 Awards

DEADLINE

Friday, November 30, 2018, at 4:30 p.m.

Essay Submissions: Submit online via the link provided above for each age group. If you don’t have internet access, please contact the C.A.R.E. Office at 320-308-2214 or care@stcloudstate.edu.

Artwork Submissions: Label with: Name, phone number, email, school, grade, art medium & brief artist statement. Artwork should NOT be framed. Elementary, Middle & High School work should be no larger than 24”, & College 48”. Artwork is delivered to C.A.R.E office at St Cloud State University, Miller Center 212. Notification: Applicants will be notified of award status by January 11, 2019. The awards are presented at the annual MLK breakfast on January 21, 2019 at 8:00 a.m at the River’s Edge Convention Center.
