2018 Spring Break Service Trip to Lame Deer, MT

The 2018 spring break service trip to Lame Deer, MT commemorates ~25 years of partnership between SCSU, the people of the Northern Cheyenne Nation, and the Boys & Girls Club in Lame Deer, MT.  As SCSU focuses this academic year on the element of Our Husky Compact which is: “engage as a member of a diverse and multicultural world”, this trip takes on even greater significance.  Approximately 15 SCSU students ranging in age, gender, ethnicity, background, and more will join two SCSU staff members on this educational and personal journey for 8 days.  We will drive together in vans to and from MT, eat and lodge together in cabins, serve and learn together by working with the youth at the Boys & Girls Club daily, and engage in volunteer projects needed by the tribe.  We will have opportunities to visit significant/historical American Indian sites and hear from tribal people about their culture.  We will engage in nightly reflection about our individual and collective experiences.  The trip provides a mechanism for students of all cultural backgrounds to make meaningful connections across cultural boundaries as early as their first year of college.  By providing students the opportunity to experience a variety of culturally diverse environments we aspire to enhance the acceptance and understanding of, as well as engagement with cultural diversity once the students return to the SCSU campus.
