Academic Learning Center (ALC)

Tutor Training

The Academic Learning Center offers training for tutors in all disciplines across campus.

Our program reached Level 1 and Level 2 certification from the College Reading and Learning Association in 2011.

We require 10 hours of training that begins with a two-hour orientation session. We cover the roles, rights, and responsibilities of a tutor.

Tutors then choose how they will complete the additional eight hours of training:

  • Four online modules

- Setting goals and planning.

- Learning styles.

- Study skills.

- Memory and the brain.

  • A selection of 1-hour workshops covering topics such as:

- Working with students with disabilities.

- Effective communication skills.

- Preparing for cumulative exams.

After orientation, tutors can access the Tutor Training D2L Brightspace site with handouts and other information useful to tutors.
