Orientation Student Coordinators

Orientation Student Coordinators play an integral role in St. Cloud State University’s orientation programs: Huskies Advising & Registration and Huskies 1st Four Days. They support the recruitment and training of Student Advisors and Orientation Leaders, market and promote orientation programs, mentor and provide direction to student leaders, and provide critical logistical support during orientation programs. The Student Coordinator position runs from February through September. Four positions are available. Orientation Student Coordinators report to the Orientation Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Support the recruitment and hiring process for approximately 15 Student Advisors (SA) and 75 Orientation Leaders (OL)
  • Serve as evaluators during orientation student leader group process
  • Work as a team to develop and facilitate student leader training
  • Mentor and provide direction to SA and OL teams
  • Develop and implement social media campaigns and communication plans to promote orientation programs
  • Present to large and small groups of new students and their families
  • Attend regular Orientation staff meetings and 1:1 meetings with supervisor
  • Huskies Advising & Registration (A&R) responsibilities
    • Support both virtual and on campus Huskies Advising & Registration programs
    • Plan and facilitate components of Student Advisor training
    • Directly mentor and provide support to a team of 3-4 Student Advisors
    • Support course registration experience for new students, including presentation, assisting with registration, and troubleshooting
    • Coordinate new student check in process during A&R programs
    • Provide logistical support during A&R programs
    • Maintain a sense of team identity and motivation for Student Advisors throughout the summer
  • Huskies 1st Four (H1st4) responsibilities
    • Support both virtual and on campus Huskies 1st Four events
    • Plan and facilitate components of Orientation Leader training
    • Provide direction to and manage OLs’ daily schedules and assignments during H1st4 Days
    • Coordinate new student check in process during H1st4 Days
    • Provide logistical support during H1st4 Days, including event set up, coordination, and tear down
    • Maintain communication and motivation of OLs throughout spring and summer
    • Support H1st4 Weeks programming
    • Other duties as assigned

Position-Specific Responsibilities

We are hiring four Orientation Student Coordinators in three specific positions: Communications, Training, and Operations. Although there are specific positions, all work will be completed collaboratively with their supervisor and team.

  • Orientation Student Coordinator: Communications
    • Develop and execute communication plans to support orientation programming and students’ transition to St. Cloud State
    • Maintain a consistent, active, and engaging social media presence:
    • Facilitate student leader takeovers
    • Ensure content is welcoming and representative of St. Cloud State students
    • Promote orientation events
    • Respond to comments and questions
    • Share helpful information to help students prepare to transition to St. Cloud State
    • Create graphics and event postings in Huskies Connect
    • Create bios of each student leader and post to website
    • Coordinate photography and videography during orientation programs
    • Manage a digital archive of photos and videos from orientation programs
    • Coordinate content and distribution of student staff newsletters
    • Facilitate training sessions for student leaders on appropriate communication, social media presence, and how to promote orientation programs
    • Manage printed and electronic signage for orientation programs (including posters, handouts, screens around campus, etc.)
    • Design, manage, and keep inventory of orientation swag giveaways
    • Coordinate student leader celebrations following each orientation program
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Orientation Student Coordinator: Training
    • Manage D2L training courses for both orientation programs:
    • Post assignments and content
    • Respond to message board posts
    • Track student leaders’ progress toward completing training
    • Coordinate make up training process for student leaders who cannot attend scheduled training
    • Track student leader hours and submit to supervisor each pay period
    • Collaborate with supervisor and other Student Coordinators to plan comprehensive training programs for student staff
    • Ensure that training sessions contribute to orientation learning outcomes
    • Ensure that training sessions are supporting student leaders in becoming equitable and inclusive leaders
    • Coordinate student leader recognition programs
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Orientation Student Coordinator: Operations (2 positions available)
    • Manage assessment processes for orientation programs
    • Update existing tools
    • Ensure students complete program surveys
    • Develop assessment reports after each orientation program
    • Facilitate pre- and post-assessments for student leaders to measure their learning in Student Advisor and Orientation Leader positions
    • Manage student registration lists for orientation programs:
    • Ensure accurate information in a timely manner
    • Follow up with students for whom we have incomplete information
    • Coordinate August Advising & Registration programs with Executive Director
    • Coordinate student leader feedback processes to contribute to their professional development
    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • One or more of the following:
    • Previous experience as a Graduate Assistant, Intern, or Student Employee in Advising & Student Transitions at St. Cloud State
    • Previous experience as an St. Cloud State Student Coordinator, Student Advisor, or Orientation Leader
    • Enrolled in St. Cloud State’s College Counseling & Student Development or Higher Education Administration masters or doctoral programs
    • St. Cloud State undergraduate or graduate student with previous work experience related to leadership, hiring/training/supervising students, orientation, academic advising, and/or major event planning
  • GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Good academic and conduct standing
  • Enrolled in 6+ credits/semester at St. Cloud State for upcoming Spring and Fall semesters
  • A passion for orientation and supporting students in transition
  • Strong communication and rapport-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Strong technical skills (especially Zoom, Excel, OneDrive, D2L, and Microsoft Teams)
