Advising and Student Transitions

Tristan RichardsGet to know Jessica Nelson!

Jessica is convinced that she has the best job on campus! She loves being part of student's first days on campus through Orientation and helping them make St. Cloud State their second home. She considers the academic advising process a privilege, feeling honored to walk the journey towards graduation with students. As a former serial major-changer herself, she has a special place in her heart for undeclared and exploring students. Throughout her career, she has had the chance to introduce a variety of new initiatives to support students including mentoring programs, support initiatives for students with disabilities, and creating experiences that help students transition to academic life. In her free time, Jessica loves to explore communities through festivals and unique museums and cultural events. She loves to hike and collect stamps in her National Parks passport. And while wandering the woods is one of her favorite ways to unwind, she also appreciates the energy of a crowded city street. She loves dogs, middle eastern cuisine, art galleries, anything purple, political talk, a good book and stocking up on cheap sunglasses. If you have ideas on how to make the Husky experience better, she wants to hear about it! Please stop by or make an appointment.

What advice would you give a new student as they transition into St. Cloud State?

  1. Time management is key to juggling it all. Identify a system that works for you and use it. Not sure how? See your advisor or a Husky Coach!
  2. Never again in your life will you have access to so many people that want to help you succeed, or so many resources to help you grow and explore. From faculty and staff who want to support you, to speakers, art exhibits, and activities, a world of opportunity is being created for YOU. It is unique to this space and this moment in time. Take advantage of as much as you can!
