A Husky hello graphic

Dear Huskies,

This will be my final Huskies Tales update. I have made the decision to leave St. Cloud State and pursue other opportunities in higher education. Over the last three years, I have met many of you and heard your stories about your time at SCSU. It is clear there is passion and enthusiasm within the SCSU community.

My time at SCSU has been a period of change; much needed change according to many of you. I am pleased with the changes we have implemented within the office of Advancement & Alumni Engagement. We have facilitated new opportunities for our alumni and donor community to connect across Minnesota, around the United States and across the world. We launched a successful Alumni Survey, where we heard directly from you — our 134,000-strong alumni community — about what is important to you and how you would like to be involved with SCSU. This will help shape and inform our engagement with you moving forward.

The #OurSCSU initiative continues to grow and highlight the positive impact SCSU alumni and friends are having on their industry, in their communities and on society. We enhanced the impact of our donors' philanthropy and increased the total number of donors to SCSU, the first increase since 2020. All positives as we look to the future for SCSU.

What I also experienced during my time was reticence and reluctance toward change. I recognize change is difficult for some, but without change, we cannot grow and thrive. A community that pines for the past or wishes for "things to go back to the way they were," is not one that can be successful in a quickly changing society and higher education landscape. SCSU, with its proud 156-year history, should be mindful and informed by the past but must innovate and change to stay ahead of the curve — not behind it.

You are an important part of the success of SCSU. The words you use to describe SCSU are heard. The stories you share are listened to. If the language you use about SCSU is negative or rooted in rumor instead of fact, that sticks. You play a significant role in how people view St. Cloud State University.

If SCSU is important to you, then speak positively about it, continue to push for change and innovation, and resist the urge to be stuck in hand-wringing. Be solutions-oriented and be champions for your SCSU.

I know firsthand that there are leaders at SCSU who are focused on strengthening the University and ensuring another 156 years of impactful educational journeys. This will be achieved through change, with your support and by understanding that status quo is not an option.

Thank you for all you do to support SCSU! Make sure your voice is heard by participating in #OurSCSU by submitting your story or that of a classmate and by submitting your nominations for the SCSU Alumni Awards.

Wishing you all the best. Go Huskies!
