$2.78 million cybersecurity award

St. Cloud State earned a $2.78 million Scholarship for Service Award for student scholarships to train future cybersecurity professionals.

The award from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security certifies that St. Cloud State is a member of the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Community, which works to educate and train students to be future cybersecurity professionals.

The five-year grant provides two-year scholarships for six students each year of the grant with the first scholarships awarded fall semester 2015.

2016 Minnesota Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

St. Cloud State University’s Information Technology Security program re-claimed the top crown, finishing first place March 5 in the 2016 Minnesota Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC).

St. Cloud State previously won the state competition in 2011 and 2012.

Six two-year colleges and three universities, including a guest college from Wisconsin, competed in a day-long battle pitching student teams against nonstop cyber-attacks by a team of security professionals across Minnesota. Teams simultaneously met business needs in the imitation of IT environments in the workforce.

St. Cloud State students launched RadioX KVEX 97.5, St. Cloud’s newest FM station Jan. 15, 2015.

The student-run '90s alternative music station teaches students skills they'll need to work in commercial radio.

KVSC 88.1 FM, the university-licensed public, independent station, teaches skills used at community radio stations.

Amos Olagunju named Carnegie Fellow

Amos Olagunju is 2014 Carnegie African Dispora Fellow. 

Olagunju, a professor of computer science and information technology, is one of 60 African Diaspora scholars named by the New York City-based Institute of International Education.

The award includes a research opportunity at Caleb University in Lagos, Nigeria.

The College of Science and Engineering (COSE) prepares students for careers in chemistry, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering management, manufacturing engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, meteorology, technology education and technology management.  College of Science and Engineering students have access to top-notch professors, a most impressive array of state-of-the-art equipment and technology and more opportunity for undergraduates to engage in world-class research than at most research-based universities.

The School of Computing, Engineering & Environment, embedded in COSE, is designed to connect related programs from the College of Science and Engineering. There are five departments with 17 different majors and minors in the school.

  • The Herberger Business School (HBS) is one of seven AACSB accredited business programs in Minnesota.  The HBS offers a Bachelor of Science program with eight major areas of study and an MBA program.   Its MBA program is offered in St. Cloud as well as at the Twin Cities Graduate Center in Maple Grove.  The Herberger Business School has approximately 2,500 undergraduate students and 110 MBA students.  The graduates of the HBS are highly valued by companies for their strong skill base and work ethic. www.stcloudstate.edu/hbs

Husky Productions teams with FOX

Student-run Husky Productions is teaming with FOX Sports this season to produce five live men’s hockey broadcasts airing on FOX Sports North and FOX College Sports.

The opportunity puts student-produced work in front of thousands of Huskies fans locally and nationally.

Husky Productions’ student broadcasters produce live coverage of all home men’s hockey games. Coverage has recently expanded to include women’s hockey, football and men’s and women’s basketball.

The Integrated Science and Engineering Laboratory Facility (ISELF) is a multi-disciplinary student-centered science facility that encourages collaboration, experiential learning and innovation. The unique 100,000 square-foot facility primarily serves upper-level and graduate science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medical technology and radiology students.

The College of Science and Engineering also serves area business and industry through ISELF by working with more than 10 regional businesses in the space including GeoComm and Microbiologics on product development and research.

ISELF was dedicated Aug. 21, 2013.

Leonard Onyiah named Carnegie Fellow

Professor Leonard Onyiah was been selected as one of 33 African Diaspora scholars by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program for 2014-2015,  the first round of African Dispora scholars.

Onyiah is working with mathematics professor Christian Bolu of Federal University Oye-Ekiti in Nigeria.

They are working on curriculum co-development and teaching in statistical analysis software programing and applications in statistics and analytics.

Residential math-science-computer camps

For more than 25 years, Robert C. Johnson’s residential math-science-computer camps have provided life-altering experiences to more than 3,200 students from grades 2 through 12. The camps serve demographic groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, including those from ethnic minority and immigrant backgrounds, low- or moderate-income families.

In 2012, Johnson received the National Association of Ethnic Studies’ Robert L. Perry Mentorship Award, for providing students — especially minority students — with opportunities that transform lives.

Visualization lab

The Visualization Lab offers many opportunities for the campus and St. Cloud community. The lab is a collaborative working environment that can offer students a hands-on experience. The lab, located in the Integrated Science and Engineering Laboratory Facility (ISELF).

The lab features six 46-inch high multi-touch computers, three 80-inch computer displays, two 3D projectors and a custom server/graphic workstation.
