Education abroad, short-term programs

Distinction

Short-term study abroad programs led and tailored by individual faculty members provide unique opportunities for students to experience new countries and cultures in the context of studying an academic discipline. The learning that takes place during these trips – usually three weeks in duration – is broad and deep.

An example is Professor Mikhail Blinnikov’s Geography 410 Geography Tour of Russia. The seven class members and Blinnikov were interviewed and featured on the local television station in Biysk. The itinerary included three days in St. Petersburg, four in Moscow and a week in the Altay Mountains of southwest Siberia, where the city of Biysk is located.

Blinnikov led class tours to Russia also in 2007 and 2009. The class introduces students to Russia’s current cultural and environmental geography as well as its history through visits to sites such as the Kremlin and museums.
