Philippe Costaglioli

Performing Arts Center Arena Theater, April 5th, 7:30pm

Dr. Costaglioli has been teaching at St. Cloud State University for 13 years. A native speaker of Catalan, Spanish, and French, his scholarly passions and expertise are nourished by four parallel fields: sociolinguistics, philosophy of language, comparative literature, and film studies. As a linguist, he dedicated part of his early work to the comparative study of romance languages (sociolinguistics and comparative literature). His doctoral thesis (DEA) was a study of Catalan contemporary poetry in the European sociopolitical context and modern literary tradition. It also served as a reflection on the philosophy of translation and its affect on the poetic act. Post-doctoral work explored new trends in contemporary poetry ( France, Catalunya, European, and especially Mediterranean domain) and its connection to spirituality, as well as sensuality and problems of symbolic and visual representation. His work also analyzed how the contemporary poem orchestrates space, void, and silence to sculpt a new and demanding world landscape.

Following up on his long held passion for cinema, he continues to explore the ties between film and poetic theory.

As a poet, Dr. Costaglioli has translated Catalan poets (Espriu, Brossa, etc.) into French and English, American poets (Simic, Clifton, etc.) into Catalan and French, and French poets ( Metz, Schehade, etc.) into Catalan and English. His poems have been published by Editions L’Amiere Pays (France) and Ed. Jardins de Samarcanda (Catalunya). He has performed them throughout the United States, as well as in Paris, Toulouse, and Barcelona.

“My House is Your Breathing”, a collaboration with composer Scott Miller and video artist Ron Gregg, has been shown in the United States, Gallery Experimental in Toulouse, France, The University of Barcelona, and the University of Prague and Olomouc in the Czech Republic. Their most recent collaboration, “Shape Shifting: Shades of Transformation”, also includes the St. Paul-based contemporary music ensemble, Zeitgeist.
