Hate crime/bias-motivated vandalism - W. W. Holes Hall

The following reported acts of HATE CRIME/BIAS-MOTIVATED VANDALISM which occurred in W. W. Holes Residence Hall constitute a threat to the safety of our students and the security of our campus community.  All are encouraged to be vigilant concerning campus and individual security.

Shortly before noon Monday, November 19, 2007, Public Safety learned that two separate acts of hate crime/bias-motivated damage to property had occurred in W. W. Holes Residence Hall on Saturday, November 17, 2007.

At 11:15 p.m. this past Saturday, a student in Holes Residence Hall advised Community Advisors (CAs) there were markings of swastikas on mirrors in the seventh-floor men’s restroom.  Residence hall personnel responded, documented the presence of several swastikas drawn on different mirrors above the sinks in that restroom and then removed those symbols from the mirrors.  Initial interviews and investigation indicate this incident occurred between 10:35 and 11:15 p.m. that evening.

During Public Safety’s initial recording of the first incident, officers also were advised that damage had been done to the ceiling of the west elevator in W. W. Holes Residence Hall.  Observance of that damage documents an apparent attempt to "burn" a marking onto that ceiling’s surface.  The damage mimics a partial swastika symbol.  A time frame for this incident has not been determined.

Investigations continue into two similar previously reported incidents that occurred in Atwood Memorial Center last week.
