The women of Thebes have run wild into the mountains, cursed by Dionysus for not acknowledging His virgin birth. Pursuing vengeance further, the God Himself enters the nearly-deserted Thebes to enact a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with the city's arrogant ruler. Regarded as the most scandalous yet "modern" of the Greek playwrights, Euripides creates a compelling struggle between divine right and political power, pursuing it to unspeakably tragic ends.
