Theatre Program

Activities

Auditions

The Theatre Program conducts auditions for acting roles for specific productions throughout the year. The type of audition may vary, depending on the director and/or the play, but might include improvisation, reading from scripts, or performing a prepared monologue or song. It is the Program's policy that all currently enrolled students of St. Cloud State University may audition and serve in production/design positions. Many acting roles and production crew duties are offered to non-theatre majors or minors, based upon their talent and a strong vocational/recreational interest in theatre. We particularly welcome a variety of age, body type and ethnicity.

Dramatic Action

Dramatic Action is a recognized student organization at SCSU. The organization offers students a forum for theatrical activities that complements their curricular activities with the department. The organization provides assistance to the department during auditions, performances and festivals. The student members also produce shows, organize trips to conferences, conduct fundraisers, teach workshops, host high school visits, participate in departmental committee work, and conclude the year with an annual awards banquet.

Open House

Open House is an annual event planned by students for students. This annual event, hosted by Dramatic Action and Cinescope, offers the first and best chance for potential theatre majors and minors to become familiar with the faculty, students and facilities of the department. All students who may wish to participate in theatre--regardless of major or minor--are welcome to attend. Open House includes refreshments, greetings, tours of the theatre facilities, a program of production slides, student scenes, faculty introductions, and information about auditions and production crew opportunities. Watch for Open House announcements posted across campus during the first week of classes in the fall. Open House is usually followed by auditions for the semester’s productions.

Theatre L'Homme Dieu

Theatre L’Homme Dieu is a professional summer theatre with a strong educational component located in Alexandria, Minnesota. Founded in 1961, it is operated by the Alexandria-St Cloud State University Performing Arts Foundation. The theatre produces a ten-week season of plays and musicals each summer, employing professional actors, directors and designers drawn primarily from the Twin Cities theatre community. In addition, the theatre employs a resident intern company of approximately twenty student apprentices, most of whom are theatre majors from SCSU and other midwestern universities. The Artistic Director and Company Manager of Theatre L’Homme Dieu are generally members of the SCSU theatre faculty. Auditions and interviews for student company members—some of whom perform roles in TLHD’s productions and some of whom specialize in technical work, such as set construction and lighting or costumes—are held each year at SCSU and at the midwest regional American College Theatre Festival. www.tlhd.org
