Winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play. Winner of the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. When a man buys an expensive minimalist painting that appears to be simply an all-white square of canvas, his relationship with his two best friends threatens to come unraveled. Each of them sees the painting differently. Is it art, or "art"? The painting serves as a catalyst, throwing their friendship into a crisis with hilarious results. Can they ever have really understood each other if they diverge so radically in their understanding of this painting? The play brilliantly explores the power of art -- or even "art" -- to expose the nature of our deepest assumptions and pretensions.
