Professor Debra Leigh graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance (BA) and the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana (MFA.) She has been the director of the Dance program at SCSU since 1989. Before coming to St. Cloud State University, Professor Leigh served on the faculty of the Conservatory of Music and Dance and the University of Kansas City and was the founding artistic director of Ailey Camp under the direction of Alvin Ailey in Kansas City, Missouri.
Since coming to SCSU, Professor Leigh has been instrumental in changing the focus of the dance curriculum to dance as a performing art. The dance curriculum is now situated in the College of Liberal Arts in the Theatre & Film Studies department. Professor Leigh is the artistic director for the Repertory Dance Theatre and the SCSU Summer Dance Institute. She is also the founder of the Full House Children's Dance Company and continues to serve on the board for the Multicultural Children's Art Connection organization. Professor Leigh's interests include the establishment of a society that is free of racism and discrimination. To this means she has pioneered the work of the Community Anti-Racism Education Initiative.
