Restructuring Recommendation: November 5, 2003
DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT
A preliminary initial rough draft was presented at the TFR this morning:
DRAFT for November 5, 2003
The following is an effort to address three topics:
- the coordination or oversight of general education
(which seems to
have replaced the proposal to merge liberal arts and sciences colleges)
- an academic home for academic support services
- reorganization of
the provost’s office
- [a fourth topic was added: professional
studies and the possibility of a new college]
The provost’s office could be reorganized to include nine deans
and seven associate vice presidents, as follows:
Associate Vice Presidents:
Budget and Finance*
Community Outreach
Curriculum and Assessment
Enrollment Management
Human Resources, Buildings, and Grounds*
International Studies
Sponsored Programs and Research
Deans:
College of Business
College of Education
College of Fine Arts and Humanities
College of Science and Engineering
College of Social Sciences
Continuing Studies
Graduate School
Learning Resources and Technology Services
Undergraduate Studies**
* 1. Five of the proposed AVPs are already in Academic Affairs. This
plan would put directly under the provost the two divisions of Administrative
Affairs - (A) Budget and (B) Human Resources, Buildings, and Grounds
- which was probably the intention of the provost model, to have them
reporting to the provost rather than directly to the president.
** 2. The Dean [or a Council] of Undergraduate Studies would be responsible
for General Education, Honors, General Studies, Academic Support Services,
First Year Experiences, Tutoring programs, the Anoka-Ramsey Community
Connection project, ROTC, and Advising in the climate of strong major
and minor programs.
3. Each academic support unit and each student life unit should decide
for themselves where they want to be organized.
4. The Academic Council should comprise the provost and the deans and
associate vice presidents.
Other topics of discussion from the meeting:
Athletic Director and the President's Council
Moving the Associate Vice President for Community Outreach to University Advancement
NOTE: No decisions have been made. This initial draft is being distributed to
the university community to stimulation discussion and to keep the
community aware of the Task Force discussions.
