Introduction to the Faculty Consulting Program

The Advisory Board and faculty director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning understand that teaching effectiveness is a continuing, developmental process.  None of us are the same teachers now that we were when we began our careers, nor will our teaching be the same ten years from now.  Most of us have been the recipients of fine mentoring by other experienced faculty and have benefited from the willingness of those faculty to talk with us about teaching, to observe our teaching, and to provide us with honest, clear, and supportive feedback.

The Nature of Faculty Consulting

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is committed to providing opportunities for all SCSU faculty to experience individualized, confidential consulting that supports teaching effectiveness and enhanced student learning.

If you request a faculty consultant through the CETL, you can expect to meet with an experienced faculty member who brings not only a background in teaching, but also special training in one-with-one peer observation and consultation.

In particular, our faculty consultants are well prepared to address questions about

  • Teaching and learning strategies
  • Peer observation and feedback
  • Syllabus and assignment construction
  • In-class video-taping for shared review
  • Course evaluation strategies

Faculty Consulting and Your Privacy

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning exists to serve the teaching and learning community of St. Cloud State University. We understand that serving faculty and students well requires the highest regard for confidentiality.  All members of the CETL staff consider information about specific individuals who participate in CETL activities or CETL utilize services confidential.

General data about CETL use patterns may be collected for assessment purposes, but will be reported anonymously in all cases.  All materials generated during consultation including consultant’s notes, videotapes, and consultant’s reports are considered to be the sole property of the faculty person requesting CETL services. All copies and drafts of materials will be returned to the faculty member at the conclusion of the consultation.

Members of the Faculty Consultation Team

Harv Busta, Ph.D. - Accounting
My teaching philosophy is based on the notion that students learn best in an active and participative classroom. I can help develop classroom simulations and skits to foster active learning and projects involving the St. Cloud community, to give students "hands-on" practical experience. I am also knowledgeable of technology use in the classroom.

Patricia Hauslein, Ph.D. - Biological Sciences & Science Education
My teaching philosophy is based on the belief that learners re-create knowledge for understanding. I enjoy finding analogies, activities and problem-solving exercises to foster critical reasoning. I have worked on many curriculum and course development projects using current learning theories. I struggle with large classes (+200) and will gratefully commiserate on those special needs.

Niloufer Merchant, Ph.D. - Leadership & Administration, Community Mental Health, Marriage and Family Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis
I think education is about empowering students and faculty to find and add their voice to the academic, local and global community. Coming from the experience of an international student and now as a professional woman of color, I feel I can offer those experiences as a way of helping others explore new ways of looking at students and teaching. I am particularly interested in service learning and learning styles, but look forward to listening to your story and what is of particular interest to you.

Roseanna Gaye Ross, Ph.D. - Communication Studies
I am able to bring communication expertise, a background in faculty development at SCSU, and experience in non-academic consulting and training to the consultation process. I hope to help my colleagues with group facilitation and team building, presentational speaking, experiential learning strategies, interpersonal relationship building, conflict management and problem solving, interviewing and question-asking, and formative assessment and feedback.
