Keynote Address by Vincent Tinto
Vincent Tinto is an internationally renowned expert on student learning, persistence and attainment in higher education. Chair of Syracuse University’s Higher Education Program and a Distinguished University Professor, Vincent Tinto is the author of numerous books, essays, articles, and keynote addresses on learning communities, student retention, and universities as learning organizations. Professor Tinto is particularly interested in enhancing the attainment of underrepresented and underprepared students in two and four-year colleges.

This session will provide new faculty with an introduction to teaching and scholarly life at St. Cloud State University. With featured speakers drawn from the Faculty Association leadership, senior faculty, and CETL staff, participants will receive an orientation to the tenure and promotion process, the writing of Professional Development Plans and Reports, and professional development opportunities at SCSU. Other topics to be covered include time management for scholars at a teaching institution, time management for teachers at an institution that values scholarship, institutional and community service, and the SCSU student body.

to the Boyer Model

This session is recommended for all faculty and especially new faculty as well as for Deans, Associate Deans, and Chairs and administrators. Session leaders will (re)introduce participants to key concepts and principles of Earnest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (copies of this book will be available for new faculty with limited copies available for other participants as well). The application of these concepts and principles to the SCSU tenure and promotion process will also be discussed.

This workshop is the first of two offered during Convocation week by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Designed as a working forum, this session will give participants an opportunity to practice articulating learning outcomes, to exchange ideas about course and assignment design, implementation, and evaluation, to give and receive feedback on drafts of both new syllabi and syllabi under revision.

This session is designed to introduce new faculty to campus technologies and technology services. Included in the session will be an introduction to classroom technologies as well as the range of technologies students have access to for class work (email, web space, Desire2Learn, electronic reserves, wireless networks, etc.). New faculty will also learn where and how to borrow equipment, and about the range of research supports available to them.
