January Workshop 2008
January 2008 Faculty Workshop Schedule
Preface
--------------
If choosing is what the teacher does and wants the student to learn to do, choosing is also what binds them, teacher and student, and binds us all, each to one another. It is not the only thing, but it is an essential thing. How we choose to believe and speak and treat others, how we choose a civic role for ourselves, is the deepest purpose of a liberal education and of the act of teaching.
A. Bartlett Giamatti. A Free and Ordered Space: The Real World of the University
----------------
Welcome to the last of the two-day January Faculty Workshops. In 2009 we will have four days scheduled for programs and workshops. I invite your ideas during the new year about how best to use that time to further our collective project of using education to create sustainable living on our campus and in our surrounding communities. Please find attached the Workshop Schedule, which is also available on the CETL website: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/teaching/ .
This year the January workshops are shouldering three major emphases. The first is assessment. The Center for Assessment and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning are bringing Dr. Barbara Walvoord to campus. She will be giving the keynote address and conducting intensive workshops with various groups (specific and general) of faculty in furthering the development of our assessment plan at SCSU.
The second emphasis is upon Strategic Planning. Academic Affairs and Administrative Affairs have requested time for this in the January Workshop schedule. SCSU is now in an energetic phase to bring our strategic planning process to fruition. This process is pulling together representatives from all sectors of the university to have input into the various dimensions of our institution and its operation. There are several sessions in the schedule devoted to Work Groups. These thematic groups and their constituents will be meeting during the two days while other programs are also occurring. There are two basic trajectories of strategic planning: academics and facilities. A special meeting will be hosted by Steve Ludwig, Vice President for Administrative Affairs and facilitated by two off campus professionals (Greg Vandal, Superintendent of Schools, Sauk Rapids-Rice School District and David Leapaldt, Grooters Leapaldt Tideman Architects), that will involve a visioning session for the campus facilities master plan (a similar session will be held at the spring Faculty Forum). Box lunches will be provided and seating is limited to the first 30 people who pre-register at 308-2286 or email: adminaffairs@stcloudstate.edu.
The third emphasis is upon the growth of this academic community as demonstrated in the commitment of faculty to their profession, their disciplines, and to the lives of those with whom they share this large endeavor we call education. The third-emphasis programs are those which manifest the creative-critical inquiry by which faculty develop expertise, and make valuable contributions to the growth and development of St. Cloud State University.
Additional Note#1: On January 15th from 8:00-9:00 am the administration will provide an update on bias-motivated acts on campus.
Additional Note#2: For all SCSU employees, that the Office of Human Resources is hosting an employee appreciation reception in the Atwood Little Theatre Lounge.
We trust that you will have a restorative break, and we look forward to seeing you in 2008.
Daniel Wildeson, Ph.D.
Director, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and
Professor, Department of Communication Studies

Anti-Semitism in Literature and Everyday Life: What Were They Thinking and What Should We Do? Voyageurs North This workshop is intended as a way to informally share knowledge and foster understanding of the sensitive issues surrounding recurring incidences and expressions of anti-Semitism. It will consist in four parts. First a brief discussion of definitions and etymology of some of the important terms related to anti-Semitism, and the presentation of some examples of canonized world literature and authors who wrote “anti-Semitically.” The second part is an informal survey of what workshop participants have observed in everyday life, to generate discussion about the forms in which anti-Semitism occurs in our own world and the role that racism plays in our lives. The third part will be discussion surrounding a few film clips taken from various documentaries about contemporary cases of anti-Semitism around the world and specific cultural and political examples from Germany and the US. The last part will be analysis of the survey sheet in light of the film clips, and a critique of documentary approaches to the subject. We are especially interested in a discussion about how we evaluate and judge “pranks” and criminal offenses, when and how our moral judgment is required as a university community. We want to conclude with an open discussion and evaluation of the workshop. Facilitators: Bernard Reuter, Joseph Edelheit |

Road Warriors: The Paperless Office Miller Center 218 The promise of the paperless office seems like just an old dream with all ofour efficient printers capable of spitting out 14-50 pages per minute. In the past few years, with the emphasis on distance students, Desire2Learn, and pressures on budget, academia is becoming increasingly paperless. To be successful, students and faculty must know the strategies to help them manage an increasing amount of electronic data, including documents, email, spreadsheets, etc. This session will teach the participants three strategies, including the benefits/realities of keeping information in electronic form, the advanced approach (new technologies to enhance recordkeeping/learning, such as scanners, software, etc.), and the essentials of keeping all this information organized (file formats, file naming, storage, safe computing) Facilitators: Rich Josephson, Tom Steman |
