"A Webpage for Designing and Evaluating Oral Presentations Workshop"

Presenters: Diana Rehling, Paula Tompkins, and Dave Warne (Communication Studies)
Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2002
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Miller Center - MC-218 (second floor)

Description of Workshop: A hands-on exploration of the website Tompkins & Rehling have created, with an opportunity to design or redesign an oral presentation assignment; although not part of the original grant, Dave Warne joined the grant team to add his expertise. They will begin by explaining the goals of the website and by demonstrating its features.  Participants will then have an opportunity to explore the website, using it to design or redesign an oral presentation for a class they teach with feedback from the website authors.  Participants are welcome to bring with them to the workshop the ideas and the materials necessary to work on designing an actual oral presentation assignment.

About the Grant:  Professors Tompkins & Rehling received a Learning by Doing Grant through MnSCU Center for Teaching and Learning for the academic year 2001-2002.  Their project has been to develop a website, entitled Presentation Help Online, to provide support for faculty at St. Cloud State and across the state in designing and evaluating oral presentation assignments.  The website includes discussion of issues to consider in designing oral presentation assignments, tips for evaluating oral presentations, and sample assignments and evaluation forms that can be downloaded and modified.  In addition, the website includes links to other internet resources that can support students in preparing oral presentations.  The goal of the website is to provide faculty members and students with the means for achieving better learning through oral presentation assignments.

About the Presenters:  Tompkins, Rehling, & Warne, professors in the Department of Communication Studies at SCSU, have among them nearly 70 years of experience in teaching Communication Studies, including public speaking.  They have called upon their years of training and experience in studying oral communication to author the website.

"Discipline/Program Workshops and Faculty Small Grants in Teaching and Learning "

Presenter: Brenda Lyseng, Faculty Development Coordinator, MnSCU CTL
Date: Wednesday, March 6, 2002
Time: 1:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. & 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.
Location: Miller Center - MC 114/115

Discipline/Program Workshops: Each year the MnSCU Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) solicits for system-wide, discipline-based faculty development workshops. These workshops are one-day events to which all MnSCU faculty in the discipline or program area are invited to participate. Workshops can also be planned to be interdisciplinary in that faculty from more than one discipline/program meet to discuss common issues. The goal of these workshops is to provide a time and a place for faculty to engage in discipline-specific or interdisciplinary conversations abut teaching and learning.

Faculty Small Grants in Teaching and Learning: Faculty Small Grant Projects under MnSCU CTL provide resources and structure for faculty to develop projects to improve teaching, curriculum, and student support. All eligible faculty (see Guidelines), including instructors, counselors, librarians, and media and learning center coordinators, may propose projects under this program. Faculty are encouraged to develop creative projects for exploring and experi- menting with new teaching methods, innovative curriculum development, and improved strategies for student support services.

About the Presenter: Brenda Lyseng is serving her third year as a Faculty Development Coordinator at MnSCU CTL. One of her resposibilities is working with these two grants.
