"Making the Most of the Lecture Method of Instruction"

Date: Friday, February 21, 2003
Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood - N. Glacier Room
Facilitators: Annette Schoenberger (CSCI), Jeffery Smith (PHIL)

Description: “The lecture method is dead” says many faculty. Others indicate that it is untrue that the lecture method is no longer being used today. Research has shown that the lecture method is alive and well and thriving on college campuses.

If you choose to integrate lecture into your teaching strategies, what should or could you do to assure your students are actually learning from your lectures? Are there resources “out there” to help you plan your lectures? How much is enough, how much is too much when it comes to the lecture method of instruction?

Join our facilitators as they share some stories (both good and bad) about the lecture method of instruction.

"Large Group Instruction: Some Experienced Instructors Share Their Successes and Challenges"

Date: Friday, March 21, 2003
Time: 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood - Lady's Slipper
Facilitators: Tracy Ore (SOC/ANTH)

Description: Have you ever wondered just how you would manage a “large class” if you received this assignment as part of your teaching load? Would you proceed as usual, but allow more time for grading more papers. Or, would you search for ways to modify your teaching to accommodate this different type of class?

Join this group of faculty who have experienced large classes. Some have experienced “large classes” of 40, while others have taught “large classes” of 200 or more.
Hear some interesting stories, straight from those who have experienced it. Ask questions, ponder their suggestions.

"Wisdom of our Elders: Teaching Advice, Tips, and Strategies from Senior Faculty"

Date: Friday, April 18, 2003
Time: 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood Center - N. Glacier Room
Facilitators: Glen Palm (CFS), Jerry LaVoi (CDIS), Lynn Metcalf (ART) and others may be added

Description: Our Native American brothers and sisters have relied on the wisdom of their elders for generations. We faculty can certainly learn a great deal from our elders – those faculty who have been in teaching for a number of years and who have been recognized as excellent instructors on our campus.

We’ve put together this panel to talk with you about some of the wisdom they have acquired over the years of teaching. They’ll talk of their experiences in the classroom, their work with students outside the classroom, their expectations for students, and their philosophies of teaching.

Join us to hear what this panel has to say as well as share your experiences, stories, and questions. We can truly learn from our elders as we strive for teaching effectiveness.
