"Teaching Students to Think Critically"
Date: Friday, Feb. 16, 2001
Time: 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood - N. Glacier Room
Facilitators: Patricia Hauslein (BIOL); Tom O'Toole
(SOC/ANTH); Carolyn Hartz (PHIL)
We can get spaceships to the moon, build computers that can solve problems, and understand genetic makeup. But many people are unable to identify, assess, and resolve issues which face them.
Join the facilitators to define crittical thinking, discuss why this skill is crucial to student success (in the classroom, the workplace, and everyday life), and identify how teachers can help students learn to think critically. Your questions and comments welcomed.
"Culturally Responsive Teaching"
Date: Friday, Mar. 23, 2001
Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood - N. Glacier Room.
Faciliators: June Parrot (WS); Jeanne Lacourt
(MINST); and Steve Casanova (MINST)
St. Cloud state has experienced an increase in the number of students on campus representing a variety of cultures. We recognize the benefits of cultural differences, but often are stymied to identify ways to be inclusive of all cultures.
The facilitators will share their experiences; provide possible ideas, techniques, and guidelines on how to create safe and respectful learning environments with teaching practices; and answer questions related to culturally responsive teaching.
"Teaching Students with Disabilites"
Date: Friday, April. 20, 2001
Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Atwood - N. Glacier Room.
Faciliators: Gretchen Starks-Martin (COUN); Dory
Bentel (SPED); and Fran Bieganek (Interim Director of Student Services)
There has been an increase in the number of students in our classes who have learning disabilities. These students can be successful in the classroom, but they may need understanding, accomodation, and assistance.
Join Gretchen, Dory Bentel, and Fran to discuss characteristics of students with learning disabilities, types of accommodations which may be needed, and what support is available for faculty at SCSU to work with these students. Fran and Gretchen will share some research they are doing regarding students with learning disabilities.
