What's it mean to be a professional in a comprehensive university? What is a professional? How are we similar/different from research or liberal arts institutions? What special skills do we need? How do we deal with self governance? What do we need to offer our students, i.e. special courses to address differences and similarities between and among us? What is SCSU doing to help faculty meet this challenge?

"Struggles and Triumphs of Publishing at a Comprehensive Public University"

Without all the support systems of a research institution, how can faculty at SCSU aspire to the Carnegie teacher-scholar model? Where does one find the time? What are the options for publication? What are the basic steps? What are some of the joys and impediments? What can be done if obstacles are encountered? What are the benefits? Hear from experienced faculty who have been successful at publishing.

"Shaping a Positive Work and Classroom Climate"

Presenter: Dr. Steven Richardson, VPAA Winona State University, formerly of Bowling Green State University

Dr. Richardson will continue the discussion started with the October Book Talk, Promoting Civility: A Teaching Challenge, which he edited. His discussion will be via ITV from Winona, so we will be utilizing the ITV facilities in the Miller Center. The session will be broken down into two parts: faculty/peer climate and faculty/student climate. College faculty frequently have common sense and good will to guide them in these issues, and that's about it. What issues do they face? What can be done to prepare them to deal with these issues? How can they reduce the stress resulting from incivility in the workplace/classroom? Where does and how can the department chair and others on campus assist with this dilemma? What is the faculty member's responsibility for promoting a conflict-free classroom? What techniques can be used to assure this tension-free environment? What are some obvious and not-so-obvious examples of work and classroom climates which are not positive?
