“Taking Student Learning Seriously” Keynote Address by Vincent Tinto.
Vincent Tinto is an internationally renowned expert on student learning, persistence, and attainment in higher education. Chair of Syracuse University’s Higher Education Program and a Distinguished University Professor, Vincent Tinto is the author of numerous books, essays, articles, and keynote addresses on learning communities, student retention, and universities as learning organizations. Professor Tinto is particularly interested in enhancing the attainment of underrepresented and unprepared students in two and four-year colleges.

This workshop will provide faculty, particularly those teaching 100 and 200 level courses with an introduction to current research on learning communities and student persistence and the application of that research to the classroom. Professor Tinto will offer faculty the opportunity to reflect on and experiment with the application of key principles of learning community design and stewardship.

Vincent Tinto Workshop with Deans and Chairs

This workshop will provide Deans and Chairs with an introduction to current research and best institutional practices with regard to student retention and attainment. Professor Tinto will discuss the development of infrastructure and the distribution of resources and incentives to initiate and sustain a meaningful student retention effort. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss opportunities, challenges, and practical action for student attainment with Professor Tinto and with one another.

Grade Book in Excel

Do you want to keep a grade book that enables you to store student’s scores and calculate percentages and grades? You can also incorporate attendance into the grade book and use the e-mail merge feature to send periodic grade reports to students. Come to this workshop expecting to begin the creation of a grade book for a fall class. Bring any information you need for the grade book (assignments and possible points, grade scale, etc). There will also be a brief discussion of using Excel and D2L together for grading purposes. Some familiarity with Excel is advantageous but not necessary. Handouts will be provided.

This session will provide new faculty with an introduction to teaching and scholarly life at St. Cloud State University. With featured speakers drawn from the Faculty Association leadership, senior faculty, and CETL staff, participants will receive an orientation to the tenure and promotion process, the writing of Professional Development Plans and Reports, and professional development opportunities at SCSU. Other topics to be covered include time management for scholars at a teaching institution, time management for teachers at an institution that values scholarship, institutional and community service, and the SCSU student body.

Searching for Teaching Excellence in Faculty Hiring Session Leader: Lynda Milne

This workshop is especially designed for deans, chairs, and faculty search committee members who are committed to hiring excellent teachers. Participants will evaluate principles and practices for using teaching portfolios and pedagogical colloquia in faculty searches. This workshop is highly interactive and includes opportunities for discussion, writing, and reflection. Lynda Milne is the Director of the Office of the Chancellor’s Center for Teaching and Learning. She brings to this session expertise derived from several years of work with university faculty and administrators on the design, development, and evaluation of teaching portfolios in hiring and promotion.

At the Faculty Forum last April, approximately 40 faculty provided input on a vision/mission statement for a revised General Education program at SCSU. This is a continuation of that session; members of the General Education Committee will present a preliminary draft of a mission and rationale statement for faculty discussion and input. The committee will also introduce a new University web site for keeping lines of communication open as work on revision continues.

Session leaders will(re)introduce participants to key concepts and principles of Earnest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (copies of this book will be available for new faculty with limited copies available for other participants as well). The application of these concepts and principles to the SCSU tenure and promotion process will also be discussed.

“There’s this student in my office…” Ways to Manage and Refer Students in Distress

The SCSU Counseling and Psychological Services will be conduction a presentation that focuses on faculty who are frequently approached by students with concerns that can seem overwhelming to both the professor and the student. These can include difficulties adjusting to college life, depression and loss of energy or motivation, intense worry and anxiety, difficulties in family, relationship problems, changes in self-confidence and performance, and questions about direction and identity. This talk will address how to respond to and find resources for students who show up in your office in distress. A panel discussion will follow.

This session will explore the history and possibilities of civic engagement at St. Cloud State University. The American Democracy Project is a national project that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement in the United States in the 21st century. It is aimed at undergraduates enrolled at institutions that are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. The project grows out of a concern about decreasing rates of participation in the civic life of America in voting, in advocacy, in volunteerism in local grassroots associations, and in other forms of civic engagement that are necessary for the vitality of our democracy.

This session explores service learning, community learning, and civic engagement at SCSU. The American Democracy Project is dedicated to experiential learning and establishing the relationships necessary for the university and its surrounding communities to create a learning environment for students and citizens. In this session we will explore the skills sets necessary for students to be involved as citizens in the 21st century. The skill sets include organizing, rhetorical skills, and political skills.
