Professor Margaret Villanueva is a 2005 recipient of the Miller Teaching and Service Award. Professor Villanueva is a professor in the Community Studies department and focuses her research on Transnational Families. She has a published article coming out in the spring of 2006 on Immigrants from Mexico in the Midwest. In particular, her article focuses on how the Grocery Store is the community center for Mexican immigrants in Dekalb, Illinois. Professor Villanueva connects her research and principles with regard to service with her teaching through her Latino Communities and Economic Development and Community Housing classes. With her award Professor Villanueva is planning on going to three more conferences in the next year. Two will be on community development and planning in Chicago and Alexandria and the other will be in Mexico City where she will present immigrant issues with colleagues from the University of Arizona at the national conference. Professor Villanueva expressed appreciation to St. Cloud State University for “giving faculty opportunities to advance our careers while serving the community”.
