Innovative Award Overview - 2010

For summer sessions 2010, the Office of Summer Sessions will continue the popular Innovative Award funding. Due to budget reductions $30,000 will be available compared to $60,000 in past years. These funds will be awarded for activities such as workshops, conferences, institutes, or courses that would not normally be funded through regular summer session allocations, but are unique and new to SCSU.

Particular attention will be paid to those projects that attract new audiences to SCSU, or that raise the profile of the institution either regionally or nationally. We urge you to consider offering courses that you believe meet the needs and interests of audiences in this region, including current undergraduate and graduate students. Proposals will be accepted on their merits toward attracting participants and meeting specific needs.

Guidelines for consideration

  • Activities that are proposed for the May intersession, summer session I and summer session II will be eligible for Innovative Award funding.
  • Strong preference is given to credit producing proposals offered through the Office of Summer Sessions.
  • Courses or experiences that would normally be offered through Continuing Studies will be given a lower preference for funding.
  • A preference is given to proposals that have not been previously funded; as Innovative Award money is not intended to be a continued source of funding for courses or workshops that are offered annually.
  • Preference is also given to courses proposed by tenured, tenure track faculty and non-tenured track faculty hired in 1988 and preceding years.
  • Temporary workshops would need to be approved through the curriculum process.

Guidelines for use of Innovative Award funds

In your planning, please be aware of the following policies:

  • Innovative Awards are provided from the regular summer session budget.  If you receive Innovative Award funds, instruction must be delivered through the Office of Summer Sessions and not the Center for Continuing Studies.
  • Innovative Awards may be used to cover the following costs: faculty salaries, textbooks used by the professor, advertising, student help, graduate assistant help, short distance domestic travel, rental of film/video costs, etc. associated with the course.
  • Innovative Awards are not available to offset salary costs for course development activities.
  • Innovative Awards are not available to cover items such as: meals, snacks, beverages, and professional association fees for students.
  • Additionally, supplies, photocopying, or textbooks provided for students cannot be covered.
  • Innovative Awards cannot be used to offset costs for international student travel, international student housing, or international faculty travel costs associated with a course.
  • Summer Session Workshop Policies – Plan ahead!  A temporary summer session workshop requires curriculum approval if it uses an All University Workshop number, i.e., 488/588, 495/595 or 695.  The curriculum review process can take up to eight weeks.  If a workshop is hosted under a departmental topic course number, it will be exempt from curriculum review.
