Add excitement to your teaching license! Become a licensed driver education teacher!

You will find easy access to our Traffic Safety Education courses, TSE courses are 90% on-line, and 10% on Interactive Television, ITV! If you are planning to complete the driver education requirements in the near future these courses are designed for you.

  • St. Cloud State University Center for Continuing Studies, Traffic Safety Education will be offering the first two of five courses leading to driver education licensure during the spring intersession, May 19 to June 5, 2009.
  • The first course is TSE 440/540 Driving Task Analysis and the second course is TSE 450/550 Methods of in Classroom Instruction.
  • The courses are offered online with two ITV sessions scheduled for Monday May 18, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday June 4, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Past participants have chosen to take the TSE courses at the graduate level and have advanced accordingly on their local school districts pay scale.
  • The remaining TSE courses will be offered Fall Semester 2009 and Spring Semester 2010.
  • Many past participants have requested to spread out the workload of 13 semester credits leading to driver education licensure, thus the offering of the intersession courses.

Why would I want to become a driver education teacher?

  • The reasons people choose to become a driver education teacher are as vast and varied as those who do it.
  • The chance to earn employment is always a major consideration and to supplement a future teacher’s income.

Teacher Leader Certificate

INTRODUCTION

The Teacher Leader Graduate Certificate Program provides graduate level specialized study in the area of leadership. It is a multidisciplinary cohort program providing knowledge and skills that could be utilized in numerous educational settings and in a variety of roles. The Teacher Leader Graduate Certificate could also complement other graduate majors in the College of Education.

SPRING 2009 to SUMMER 2010 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Summer 2009
HURL 630 Teaching for Justice, Non-Violence &the Environment: This course explores practical strategies and resources for increasing diversity, social justice, non-violence, and environmental respect in schools, universities, and other settings, specifically, how to teach about the connections between everyday thought, speech, and actions and the responsibility of all to work for better relationships, communities, and world. June 22 – July 2, Monday through Thursday, 8:00a.m.-12:30 p.m.

EDAD 697 Curriculum Development for School Leaders: This course will prepare teachers with the necessary skills to more effectively plan for instruction, align their teaching with standards, and develop assessments that provide specific and detailed information to help teachers modify and improve their teaching. Last week of July and first week in August? time?

Fall 2009
SPED 690 Inclusion of Students with Special Needs: Current and controversial topics and skills regarding the full inclusion of students with special needs. The material will be divided into three sections: policy analysis, integration skills, and research-validated practices.
Wednesdays, 5:00-9:00 p.m.

Spring 2010
ED 671 Mentoring and Supervision: A practical, hands-on course on how to work with—mentor and supervise—beginning teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, teacher assistants, interns, and others. Wednesdays, 5:00-9:00 p.m.

Summer 2010
CFS 605 Special issues Group Dynamics: This course is an in-depth analysis of group dynamics and effective group skills. Theories of group process and approaches to leadership and communication within groups will be studied. Dates and times for course to be determined.

These courses can be applied to the elective area of the Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. A student could, therefore, potentially complete the master’s degree by the end of fall 2010. The four core classes required for the master’s will be offered as follows:

ED 654 Instruction and Assessment (first 10 weeks of fall 2009, Thursdays, 5:00-9:30pm)
ED 610 Introduction to Curriculum & Instruction (end of fall 2009 and first five weeks of spring 2010, Thursdays, 5:00-9:30pm)
ED 647 Curriculum and Assessment (last ten weeks of spring 2010, Thursday, 5:00-9:30pm)
ED 612 Social Foundations of Education of ED 611 Philosophy of Education will be offered in summer 2010.

To complete the master’s, students would have a few additional credits to take; the specific number depends upon the choice of final project (thesis, starred paper, or portfolio).

Students may begin the first course in spring 2009, ED 682, by registering under “special student status” online. During that first course, application to the certificate program (and possibly the master’s program as well) can be completed. In general, the application requirements for the certificate program include the following: at least five years of teaching experience, completed bachelor’s degree with a 2.75 GPA, three letters of reference speaking to the teacher’s effectiveness in planning/preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional dispositions/attitudes. Admission to the master’s program also requires completion of the GRE and submission of application materials.

Reading Teacher K-12 Certification Program

Program Overview

The Reading Teacher K-12 Certificate Program is a five course program for licensed teachers interested in becoming either specialized teacher of reading K-12 in their school districts or focusing on improving their own classroom instruction. The program incorporates the Minnesota Board of Teaching Standards for Licensure as a Reading Teacher (8710.4725). Special emphasis is placed upon effective instruction and assessment for K-12 students who are struggling with reading.

This program is offered through the Department of Teacher Development and leads to a Graduate Certificate in Reading Teacher K-12 through St. Cloud State University’s graduate studies program. In addition, the courses taken for the Reading Teacher K-12 Certification may be applied to a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction.

Key Features

  • Provides advanced professional educational opportunities for licensed teachers.
  • The program can be completed in five semesters, including summer sessions. A student takes one course per semester.
  • Provides opportunity for teachers to develop professional networks.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Reading Teacher K-12 Certificate program, applicants must:

  • Have completed a baccalaureate degree in elementary education, secondary education, special education, or English language learning (ELL) from an accredited college or university.
  • Apply for admission to the Reading Teacher K-12 Graduate Certificate Program through the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Submit a non-refundable application fee of $35 made out to SCSU.
  • Submit an official undergraduate transcript (s) showing completion of a baccalaureate degree. If your degree was received from SCSU, or if you already admitted to a master’s degree progarm at SCSU, a transcript is not necessary.
  • Provide a one to two paragraph statement of interest and objectives in pursuing a graduate certificate as a reading specialist.
  • One year of teaching experience is strongly recommended before coursework begins.

Location of Certificate Program
Classes are held in the Education Building. Parking is available on-campus with a permit.
