Location

Olomouc, a city of approximately 110,000, is three hours by train from either Prague or Vienna and only one hour from Brno, the capital of the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Krakow, Poland and Budapest, Hungary are easily accessible by train as well, and Berlin, Germany is within reach for an artistic and cultural weekend. The city has a heritage as a crossroads of Central Europe and hosted Mozart and Gustav Mahler during its history.

Czech Students under a Large UmbrellaA great deal of 17th and 18th century architecture remains in place for students to study and enjoy. The city hosts its own symphony orchestra, Opera Company, Ballet Company, chamber music organizations, numerous art galleries and outstanding examples of Baroque cathedral architecture.

Palacky University is located in Olomouc and is the host institution for SCSU students. It has an enrollment of 12,000 and a faculty of 1,000. The university received its first charter in 1573. It has been closed at various times in its history but was re-established in its present form in 1946. It is a university that focuses on international students and studies and has extensive resources for the international student. top

Academic Program

Students whose major area of study are music or visual arts and design are invited to contact the Center for International Studies, the Department of Music, or the Department of Art for information concerning this opportunity. Students who apply will be evaluated by the respective departments to determine their suitability for enrollment in the program.

Study includes a culture and language course taught by English speaking Czech faculty with field trips to significant artistic and cultural locations, applied study in the students' major field, classes in art or music history or in theoretical areas of the students' respective disciplines. Independent study or special problems may be accommodated by the resident faculty from St. Cloud State University.

Palacky University is a modern university with ample computerized musical and design opportunities and significant professional opportunities. Students will be expected to discuss their study with a major advisor in their department and determine its applicability toward their degree prior to departure. Class schedules are based on the activity, location, independent study and SCSU requirements.

Students will be required to register for 15 credits of SCSU courses consisting of the following distribution. It is assumed that students enrolled in this program will register for the course of study listed below before leaving the USA.

  1. The students will study the Czech language to aid them in their acculturation. They will study the artistic and cultural aspects of the Czech Republic.

    Three credits taught by Palacky University faculty

    FORL 199 - Czech Language - Intensive Czech language instruction and culture.

  2. Private applied studies in individual disciplines.

    Three - Six credits to be taught by local faculty resources. Music instruction from performing artists. Art students will study with one or more of six selected faculty from the Art Department of Palacky University. To be selected from:

  3. Three credits ART 439 - Art in Central Europe. Course on the art and architecture of Central Europe taught on-site in the museums including individual students documenting their student experiences during the program. Taught by SCSU Faculty.

    Three Credits Seminar: Music, art, architecture, history and artistic culture in Central Europe - team taught course by members of Slavonic Studies, American Studies, music and art faculty of Palacky University and SCSU faculty.

Living Accommodations

Students in Czech Residence HallStudents are housed in residence halls maintained by the university. They have ample opportunity to interact with Czech students and with other international students. Food service is available in student services, in the community or in common kitchens provided in the student residences. The university and its resources are located within the center of the city and within walking distance of all facilities. An inexpensive tram service is provided and a student discount fare is available.

Palacky University Resources

Student housing is in student residence halls and faculty housing is in a one bedroom flat with kitchen. A student center, international studies office including fax and e-mail, classrooms, related equipment and food service are available.

Olomouc houses several other international offices, including a French cultural center, a British Council library and several Baroque churches. The city’s low-cost public transportation system is available to explore its inexpensive economy. Excellent train service connects Olomouc to many other culturally active cities such as Prague, Vienna and Brno. top

Selection - Student

Students should submit their applications to their respective departments through the Center for International Studies. Student applicants will be contacted by their department or the program director for subsequent interview, audition, or submission of artistic portfolio.

Selection - Faculty

The Department of Music and the Department of Art encourage all qualified faculty to consider applying to direct the program to be offered at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. Faculty should submit current curriculum vitae, a letter of interest that includes information about their interest in international education, their ability to supervise a special problems course, their ability to supervise diverse students in a foreign setting and other information pertinent to their application. An ad hoc committee appointed by the Faculty Evaluation Committees of the Department of Art and the Department of Music will evaluate the applications and make a recommendation to their respective faculties.

Selected faculty will receive air transportation, room and a small supplemental living expense in addition to a travel, entertainment and contingency budget during their assignment. top

Program Costs and Financial Aid

Students pay a comprehensive program fee, which is set in part according to the cost of living and academic fees at St. Cloud State University. This includes room, resident tuition, round-trip transportation, special Czech instruction, visa fees, and program administration costs. Non-resident students are charged the difference between resident and non-resident tuition. This is added to the basic program fee. Personal expenses such as food, extra travel, books and passport fees are not included. All financial aid, including work study, is available to students on this program. Financial Aid may be applied to your program cost once $400 has been paid. The comprehensive fee is subject to change without notice. The program fee is not prorated nor is any part of it refundable. top
